What Little Drops of Water Class 2 contains
This is a poem chapter, not a long prose lesson, so most of it is the song and the activities that follow it.
- Let us sing — the poem itself, two short stanzas about nature and about kind actions.
- New words — a box with five words from the poem: mighty, pleasant, kindness, peaceful and ocean.
- Let us speak — say words connected to water, discuss how we use water, and look at pictures to describe what you see.
- Let us listen — follow spoken directions to colour the birds, the leaves and the plant.
- Let us draw — draw one thing that would make the earth more beautiful.
- Let us write — match words to complete phrases, choose the right words to fill blanks, and rearrange words into proper sentences.
- Project work — with an adult’s permission, touch and feel kitchen things such as banana, salt, oil, flour, sugar, rice and wheat, then pick the one that feels grainy and bring it to class.
- Note to the teacher — three short notes that help the adult guiding the activities.
Key ideas in Little Drops of Water Class 2
The poem’s one idea is that tiny things add up. A single drop of water or a single grain of sand is very small, yet every drop together forms the ocean and every grain together forms the land.
The second stanza turns the same idea to people. Tiny words of love, tiny acts of kindness and tiny deeds of warmth spread smiles and happiness around us.
That is why the chapter keeps asking the child to do small actions of their own — say words about water, describe a picture, colour a plant, draw one thing that would make the earth more beautiful. The child does with words and hands what the poem says: small pieces, joined together, become something good.
Picture activities in Little Drops of Water

The pictures in this chapter are part of the activities, not separate figures to study. Three tasks use pictures, and each one practises a different skill.
- Let us speak — observation and describing. Children look at pictures and describe out loud what they notice. This practises looking carefully and putting what you see into words.
- Let us listen — following directions. Children listen to simple instructions, pause between them, and colour each part — the birds, the leaves and the plant — in any colour they like. This practises listening and doing exactly what was heard.
- Let us draw — expressing an idea. Children draw one thing that would make the earth more beautiful, turning the poem’s message into a picture of their own.
New words in Little Drops of Water with meanings
The New words box holds five words from the poem. Here is each word with a meaning a Class 2 child can use, and a short example sentence.
| Word | Meaning in simple words | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| mighty | very big and strong | The mighty elephant crossed the road. |
| pleasant | nice, enjoyable and pleasing | We sat in the pleasant shade of the tree. |
| kindness | being gentle, helpful and good to others | Feeding the birds is an act of kindness. |
| peaceful | calm and quiet, without worry | The park is peaceful early in the morning. |
| ocean | the huge sea that covers most of the earth | A boat can cross the big ocean. |
Two more words matter for the exercises even though they are not in the box. Drops are tiny amounts of liquid that fall one at a time, like raindrops. Grains are tiny hard pieces, like grains of sand, rice or salt. Getting these two right is what the circle-the-words task and the grainy project are really checking.
Common mistakes in Little Drops of Water exercises
These are the slips that show up most in this chapter’s written exercises. Each row names the mistake, the rule that fixes it, and a way to check.
| Mistake | Correct rule | How to check your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Mixing up the matching pairs | Complete the phrases exactly as the poem has them: grains of sand, drops of water, deeds of kindness, words of love. | Say the finished phrase aloud — if it does not sound like the poem, swap the words. |
| Using “drops of” for solids | “Drops of” belongs with liquids; grainy solids take “grains of”. | Ask: can this thing fall as a single drop? Liquids yes, solids no. |
| Forgetting the capital letter or full stop after rearranging | Every sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a full stop. | Check the first letter and the last mark before handing in. |
| Picking the wrong container word | cup of milk, slice of bread, tube of toothpaste, box of pencils, bag of clothes. | Think about the shape: milk is poured, toothpaste is squeezed, pencils are kept in a box. |
Worked example — rearranging words into a sentence. Take a new set of words: car red the is. Rearrange them in meaning order: the car is red. Now add the capital letter and the full stop: The car is red. The capital T starts the sentence and the full stop ends it — both are the marks of a proper sentence.
Memory trick for the four pairs: grains of sand lie on the ground, drops of water fall as rain, deeds are kind, and words carry love.
| Use “drops of” with liquids | Use “grains of” with grainy solids |
|---|---|
| water, milk, oil | sand, salt, sugar, rice |
| Rain falls drop by drop. | Sugar and salt stay as separate grains. |
How Little Drops of Water is used in Class 2 English
This is a poem and activity chapter, so its own exercises are the main practice. Instead of one heavy topic, the chapter builds several small skills at once.
- Vocabulary — the five New words, plus drop, grain, and container words like cup, tube, box, slice and bag.
- Sentence sense — the rearrange-the-words task teaches capital letters and full stops.
- Listening — the colouring task makes children act only on what they hear.
- Observation and speaking — describing pictures and discussing how we use water.
