What a student actually meets at each stage changes more than the numbers show:

  • Primary (Classes 1-5): the shelf grows from two books in Class 1 to four from Class 3, as young readers move from learning to read to reading to learn, with Environmental Studies and Arts joining Mathematics and English.
  • Middle (Classes 6-8): Science and Social Science each become separate books for the first time, and vocational education enters the list — this is where subject-wise study begins.
  • Secondary (Classes 9-10): the smallest shelf in the directory, with a single book per subject as board exam preparation takes over.
  • Senior secondary (Classes 11-12): the widest shelf in the directory, with 17 to 18 subject entries per class and the longest books in the whole range.

The table below groups the twelve classes into four bands and shows how the shelf changes between them.

Classes Subjects listed Chapters Printed pages What changes
Primary (1-5) 16 285 3,340 Subject entries grow from 2 to 4 as Environmental Studies and Arts are added from Class 3.
Middle (6-8) 18 276 5,407 Science and Social Science are listed as separate books for the first time; vocational education also appears.
Secondary (9-10) 9 132 2,300 The smallest shelf — Class 9 lists 5 subject entries and Class 10 lists 4.
Senior secondary (11-12) 35 496 9,923 The widest shelf — 18 subject entries in Class 11 and 17 in Class 12, with the longest books in the directory.

These are directory totals, not the full CBSE subject scheme. The directory lists senior secondary as its widest band and secondary as its smallest, which matches the shift from class-wide study in the early years to chosen subjects later. The wider CBSE scheme includes optional, skill and elective subjects beyond these rows.

Subjects Listed Across Classes 1 to 12

The subjects the directory holds change in a clear pattern as classes rise:

  • Classes 1-2 list Mathematics and English.
  • Classes 3-5 add Environmental Studies and Arts, taking the class shelf to four subject entries.
  • Classes 6-8 list Science and Social Science as separate books, and vocational education appears here.
  • Class 9 lists Skill Education among its five subject entries.
  • Classes 11-12 widen to 17-18 subject entries each, including Geography, Biology, Computer Science, Political Science, Sociology and Accountancy.

The change that matters: Environmental Studies serves Classes 3 to 5, and from Class 6 the directory lists Science and Social Science as separate books. This list covers only the NCERT textbooks the directory holds — a subject that does not appear in a class row may still exist in the wider CBSE scheme.

How to Find Your NCERT Book Page in Three Steps

  1. Find your class in the class directory table — one row per class, one link per class hub.
  2. Open the class hub to see the subjects listed, each with its chapter count and printed pages.
  3. Open your subject page and jump to the chapter you are studying this term.

Edition check. Each class hub names the NCERT edition its chapter notes follow, so match it against the book your school issued before you rely on the page. The official NCERT textbook portal confirms which edition is current — open it before buying, borrowing or downloading a book.

Syllabus check. For Classes 9 to 12, textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, so confirm the current official syllabus before exam preparation. The CBSE academic site publishes the curriculum and the syllabus that govern the board examinations.

What You Find Inside These NCERT Book Pages

Each subject page in this directory is made for revision, not for replacing the textbook:

  • Chapter-wise notes in plain language, grounded in the NCERT edition with textbook page references.
  • The figures the textbook names, shown and explained — each diagram is read aloud so you know what it actually shows.
  • Worked examples with original numbers, not the textbook’s own values, so you can follow the method and then test yourself.
  • Exercise questions mapped to the idea each one tests, so you know what a question is asking before you attempt it.

The pages do not reprint NCERT text, and they do not assume every chapter is examinable — for Classes 9 to 12, confirm the current official syllabus before exams. Everything on these pages is referenced to the NCERT textbooks used in the CBSE scheme.

Sources and Data Verification

  • What the figures describe: the current NCERT textbooks in the CBSE scheme for Classes 1 to 12, as listed in this directory.
  • What this page covers: NCERT textbooks only — not state board or SCERT books, not CBSE reference or supplementary titles, and not older NCERT editions outside this directory.
  • Academic session: the session for which this listing is maintained is stated in the introduction; every count follows the editions named on each class hub.
  • Who settles what: NCERT settles textbooks, editions and official PDFs; CBSE settles the curriculum, syllabus and examinations. To confirm a textbook edition, check NCERT — to confirm the exam syllabus, check CBSE.

NCERT Books — Common Questions

Which classes are covered in the NCERT books directory on this page?

Classes 1 to 12. The class directory table lists every class, and each row links to its class hub. The senior secondary classes carry the most subject entries and the longest books.

Where can I buy NCERT books?

NCERT sells through its official website and authorised sellers, and many cities have book shops that stock NCERT titles — check the official site for current ordering options before buying. When you buy, match the edition named on your class hub against the copy you are offered.

What is the difference between an NCERT book and the CBSE syllabus?

An NCERT book is the textbook; the CBSE syllabus is the examinable plan. NCERT publishes the textbooks, their editions and official PDFs, while CBSE decides the curriculum, syllabus and examinations. For Classes 9 to 12, textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, so check the current official CBSE syllabus for exams.

How do I check which NCERT book edition my class needs?

Open your class hub — each one names the NCERT edition its notes follow. Compare that with the book your school issued, and use the official NCERT textbook portal to confirm the current edition before buying or downloading.

Do you list old NCERT books or state board textbooks?

No — this directory holds current NCERT textbooks for CBSE Classes 1 to 12 only. Older editions used by competitive exam aspirants and state board or SCERT textbooks are outside this page. The current NCERT texts are the usual foundation reading for such preparation, but the notes here follow the editions named on each class hub.
