The NCERT Class 7 Social Science book is one integrated textbook printed as two volumes, both linked below: Exploring Society — India and Beyond, Part I and Part II. Together they hold 20 chapters across 484 printed pages, with 267 verified numbered figures indexed from the textbook. These totals come from the NCERT editions maintained for the 2025-26 academic session.
The two parts are why a chapter number alone does not locate a topic. Chapters 1–12 sit in Part I, chapters 13–20 in Part II, and both parts restart page numbering at page 1. A page number from homework cannot tell you which book to open either: Chapter 13 follows Chapter 12 but opens Part II, not Part I.
The two NCERT books side by side
| Book | Chapters | Printed pages | Book page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exploring Society India And Beyond Part I | 12 | 272 | Exploring Society India And Beyond Part I |
| Exploring Society India and Beyond Part II | 8 | 212 | Exploring Society India and Beyond Part II |
Use the row whose chapter range contains the chapter number from your homework — that row’s link opens the right part’s own page, which lists every chapter and official PDF.
The NCERT Class 7 Social Science history PDF: which book holds it
It is one integrated textbook split into two physical volumes, so three quick checks tell you which part to open. Use whichever check fits what you actually have.
- By chapter number. Chapters 1–12 belong to Part I; chapters 13–20 belong to Part II. If the homework says “Chapter 8” or “Chapter 15”, that single number decides the book.
- By topic. India’s geography opens Part I (Chapters 1–3), and the early history that follows it — the mahajanapadas, the Mauryas and the Gupta age — stays in Part I (Chapters 4–7). The 6th-to-10th-century kingdoms sit in Part II.
- By what the teacher called it. A “history chapter” is not a separate history PDF for Class 7. Early history, Chapters 4 to 7, sits in Part I, while empires and kingdoms, Chapters 15 and 16, sit in Part II.
The one boundary that trips everyone: Chapter 13, The Story of Indian Farming, is the first chapter of Part II (pp. 1–28) even though it follows Chapter 12 of Part I. The Gupta Era (Chapter 7) is history, but it sits in Part I. When in doubt, trust the chapter number, not the topic label.
The official PDF filenames reveal the part too: gees1xx.pdf files are Part I chapters and gees2xx.pdf files are Part II chapters.
For example, NCERT hosts Chapter 1, Geographical Diversity of India, as a free official PDF named gees101.pdf, which you can open to read the chapter exactly as printed. Likewise, Chapter 13, The Story of Indian Farming, opens Part II as the official PDF gees201.pdf, ready to download free from ncert.nic.in.
What each part of the Class 7 SST book PDF covers
Part I is the geography-and-early-history half. It opens with India’s physical landscape — the Himalayas, the northern plains, the Thar desert — and its climate (Chapters 1–3), then the mahajanapadas, the Mauryas and the Gupta age (Chapters 4–7). It closes with sacred landscapes (Chapter 8), forms of government and the Constitution (Chapters 9–10), and money and markets (Chapters 11–12).
Part II opens with farming — Chapter 13, The Story of Indian Farming (pp. 1–28) — then turns outward to India and her neighbours and the sea routes that linked the subcontinent to Eurasia and Africa (Chapter 14). The middle covers empires and kingdoms from the 6th to 10th centuries, Harsha through the early Cholas (Chapters 15–16; pp. 61–124).
It ends back in civics and economics: the state and government (Chapter 18), infrastructure as an engine of development (Chapter 19), and banks and finance (Chapter 20).

Sources and data verification
- The figures on this page come from the NCERT textbook editions on this page. Chapter counts, page ranges and the 267 verified numbered figures were read from the two official volumes themselves, not from a syllabus summary.
- This page covers chapters, printed page spans and indexed figures for the NCERT subjects on this page. It does not cover the full CBSE subject scheme, which includes optional and skill subjects we do not index.
- This listing is maintained for the 2026-27 academic session.
- NCERT settles textbook titles, editions and official PDFs; CBSE settles curriculum, syllabus and examinations. To confirm an edition or download a chapter, ncert.nic.in is the authority.
One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official syllabus before treating any chapter as examinable.

Frequently asked questions about the Class 7 SST books
How many NCERT books does Class 7 Social Science have?
Two. The subject is one integrated textbook printed as two books: Part I has 12 chapters and Part II has 8. NCERT does not print separate history, geography and civics volumes for this class.
Which part has Chapter 13, The Story of Indian Farming?
Part II. Chapter 13 is the opening chapter of Part II even though it follows Chapter 12 of Part I — this is the most common place to open the wrong book.
Are the Class 7 SST PDFs official and free?
Yes. NCERT publishes every chapter as a free PDF on ncert.nic.in. The filenames give the part away: gees1xx.pdf files are Part I and gees2xx.pdf files are Part II.
My teacher said it is a history chapter — where do I find it?
There is no separate history PDF for Class 7 Social Science. Early history — the mahajanapadas, the Mauryas and the Gupta age, Chapters 4 to 7 — sits in Part I. Empires and kingdoms, Chapters 15 and 16, sit in Part II.
Do Part I and Part II use the same page numbers?
Yes — both restart at page 1, so a page number alone cannot tell you which book to open. Part I runs to page 272 and Part II to page 212, so lead with the chapter number.
