NCERT Science Textbook for Class 7: What’s Inside Each Chapter

The NCERT science textbook for class 7 is titled Curiosity — 12 chapters across 188 pages — and the official PDF for every chapter is linked on this page. Before you download, this page tells you what each chapter actually contains, so you are not opening files blind.

What this page adds beyond the PDF is a per-chapter count of named sections, verified numbered figures and hands-on activities, measured from the book itself. You can see at a glance which chapters are diagram-heavy, which are activity-heavy, and where the numerical work sits — before you open a single file.

The directory above counts four things for each chapter. A section is one of NCERT’s own numbered headings; a figure is a numbered figure indexed from the book; an activity is a hands-on experiment or task the chapter sets.

The questions column would list end-of-chapter exercises — this edition prints no end-of-chapter exercise block, because the practice lives inside the chapters as activities. Comparing those columns tells you a chapter’s real character before you read a word of it.

Chapter 1: The Ever-Evolving World of Science (pp. 1-6)

The opening chapter introduces science as a way of seeing and questioning the world, and at 6 pages it is the shortest chapter in the book — a reading chapter with no figures and no activities that sets the tone for the activity-led chapters to come.

Chapter 2: Exploring (pp. 7-22)

Exploring introduces acids, bases and indicators — litmus, red rose and turmeric are all tested as indicators (pp. 8-14) — then applies neutralisation to everyday situations such as ant stings and soil treatment (pp. 17-18).

Chapter 3: Electricity: Circuits and their Components (pp. 23-40)

Electricity builds from a torch to a working circuit — electric cell, battery, lamp, switch and circuit symbols — then separates conductors from insulators using a conduction tester.

Chapter 4: The World of Metals (pp. 41-56)

The World of Metals names the properties that make a material a metal — malleability, ductility, sonority, and the conduction of heat and electricity — then contrasts how metals and non-metals behave in air and water, including the rusting of iron.

Chapter 5: Changes Around Us: Physical and Chemical (pp. 57-72)

Changes Around Us separates physical change from chemical change using everyday examples — paper, melting, rusting and burning — and asks whether both kinds of change can occur in the same process, using a candle flame as the test case.

Chapter 6: Adolescence: A Stage of Growth and Change (pp. 73-88)

Adolescence is the book’s most discussion-based chapter, covering the physical, emotional and behavioural changes of the teenage years and then the habits — nutrition, personal hygiene, physical activity, a balanced social life, and saying no to harmful substances — that make the stage manageable.

The directory shows it is the only chapter with zero activities and just five figures: a read-and-talk chapter, not a lab chapter.

Chapter 7: Heat Transfer (pp. 89-104)

Heat Transfer explains the three ways heat moves — conduction, convection and radiation — then follows the consequences: land and sea breezes, the water cycle, and water seeping beneath the Earth. With 17 indexed figures, joint most in the book, this is a chapter to learn by labelling diagrams.

Chapter 8: Measurement of (pp. 105-120)

The indexed title is exactly “Measurement of” — in scope this is the measurement of time and motion, from water clocks and pendulum clocks to the SI unit of time, then speed as distance divided by time, with uniform and non-uniform motion compared on a straight track. Chapter 8 holds the book’s numerical work: the speed relationship is set out on p. 115.

Chapter 9: Life Processes (pp. 121-136)

Life Processes follows food and air through the animal body — digestion from mouth to small intestine, with ruminants and birds as the comparison cases — then respiration and gas exchange at the alveoli. Its 17 indexed figures, joint most in the book, are the digestive and respiratory diagrams to label.

Chapter 10: Life Processes in Plants (pp. 137-152)

Life Processes in Plants is built around photosynthesis — the starch test on a leaf, the role of chlorophyll and air, and the release of oxygen — and then covers the transport of water, minerals and food and whether plants respire.

Chapter 11: Light: Shadows and Reflections (pp. 153-168)

Light starts from natural and artificial sources of light, shows that light travels in a straight line through transparent, translucent and opaque materials, and ends by explaining shadows and plane-mirror images — with builds of a pinhole camera, a periscope and a kaleidoscope. At five activities, it is the most activity-heavy chapter in the book.

Chapter 12: Earth, Moon, and the Sun (pp. 169-188)

Earth, Moon, and the Sun is the longest chapter in the book (20 pages) and ties the Earth’s rotation to day and night, its revolution to the changing night sky and the seasons, and the alignment of the Sun, Earth and Moon to solar and lunar eclipses.

How to use the NCERT Class 7 Science book PDF

This book teaches by doing, so the study order below follows its character — diagram chapters first if that is your weak spot, builds before circuits, and the activities as your revision checkpoints.

Chapter type Chapters How to study it
Diagram-heavy 7 Heat Transfer, 9 Life Processes (17 figures each) Learn by labelling the diagrams and naming the parts.
Build-it 3 Electricity (torch circuit), 11 Light (pinhole camera, periscope, kaleidoscope) Do the builds; making them teaches the concept.
Discussion-based 1 The Ever-Evolving World of Science, 6 Adolescence Read and talk it through; there are no activities to run.
Numerical 8 Measurement of Practise the speed relationship \( \text{Speed} = \frac{\text{Distance}}{\text{Time}} \) (p. 115).
Experiment-led 2 Exploring, 4 The World of Metals, 5 Changes Around Us, 10 Life Processes in Plants, 12 Earth, Moon, and the Sun Run the activities; they are the chapter’s practice.

Suggested order of work. If diagrams are your weak spot, label the two 17-figure chapters (7 and 9) first. Do the Chapter 11 builds before Chapter 3’s torch circuit — shadow and reflection ideas make the circuit diagram easier to read. Then treat the book’s 24 activities as revision checkpoints rather than optional extras, because this edition carries little end-of-chapter exercise work.

The mistake this book sets up. Chapter 5 uses one candle flame to separate the two kinds of change: the melting wax is a physical change, while the burning wick is a chemical change — both happen in the same process (pp. 64-65).

Syllabus note. Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official CBSE syllabus before deciding what to revise. And if you are working from an older Class 7 Science book, match by topic rather than chapter number: acids-bases ideas, for example, now sit in Chapter 2, Exploring.
