NCERT Books Class 4 Environmental Studies: Which Book Do You Need?

NCERT Books Class 4 Environmental Studies come as two separate official textbooks, both linked below: Looking Around with 27 chapters and Our Wondrous World with 10 chapters. Together they run to 37 chapters across 380 printed pages, and the listing records no separately named syllabus sections for the subject. Use the table that follows to reach the right book and its free official PDF.

The split matters because each book restarts its chapter numbering at Chapter 1. So Chapter 1 is “Going to School” in Looking Around (NCERT, pp. 1–10) and “Our Community” in Our Wondrous World. A chapter number alone cannot tell you which book to open — this page makes the choice quick. The listing is maintained for the 2026-27 academic session.

One table below names both Class 4 textbooks, their chapter counts and page coverage, and the way into each book’s own page.

Which Class 4 science book does CBSE use?

CBSE Class 4 does not have a separate NCERT science textbook in this directory’s index. The plant, animal, water and sky topics a student means by “science” sit inside the two Environmental Studies books. Both are official NCERT publications and both circulate in schools, so which one your school uses is a curriculum choice the school or teacher makes.

Looking Around is the long-standing EVS reader; Our Wondrous World is the newer, NCF-aligned book. The science runs across both: “Ear to Ear” on animals (NCERT, pp. 11–20) and “Omana’s Journey” on travel (NCERT, pp. 47–52) are in Looking Around, while Our Wondrous World opens with “Our Community” and “Exploring Our Neighbourhood”.

“The Valley of Flowers” (NCERT, pp. 84–95) adds a Himalayan study to the Looking Around list. One caution for exam season: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official syllabus.

How to choose the right Class 4 science book for your chapter

Three quick checks tell you which book your chapter is in, without opening a PDF. Run them in order and you will know in under a minute.

  1. Read the title on the cover. If the book is called Looking Around, your chapter is one of 27; if it is called Our Wondrous World, one of 10.
  2. Match the chapter name. Child-story chapters such as “Going to School” (NCERT, pp. 1–10), “Anita and the Honeybees” (NCERT, pp. 38–46), “Omana’s Journey” (NCERT, pp. 47–52) and “Chuskit Goes to School” (NCERT, pp. 210–216) sit in Looking Around. Chapters that open with the community, the neighbourhood or the sky sit in Our Wondrous World.
  3. If you only have a number, use the book’s range. Numbers 1–27 point to Looking Around; numbers 1–10 point to Our Wondrous World. Both ranges restart at 1, so confirm the chapter name as well.

The official PDF filenames give the book away before you open them. Looking Around chapters download as deap files — deap101.pdf through deap127.pdf — while Our Wondrous World chapters download as deev files, deev101.pdf through deev110.pdf.

The mistake to name before you make it: both books have a Chapter 1 and a Chapter 3, so a chapter number alone is ambiguous. Always match the book title AND the chapter name before you begin a homework question.

Mistake Correct rule How to check your answer
“It says Chapter 1, so it must be the same chapter in both books.” Both books restart at Chapter 1, so the number alone is ambiguous. Match the chapter name — “Going to School” is Looking Around, “Our Community” is Our Wondrous World.
“There must be a separate Class 4 science book somewhere.” This directory has no separate NCERT science textbook for Class 4; science topics sit inside the two EVS books. Read the title on the cover — it will be Looking Around or Our Wondrous World.
“The PDF number tells me which book it is.” The prefix, not the number, gives the book away: deap is Looking Around, deev is Our Wondrous World. Check the filename before opening — deap101.pdf is Looking Around Chapter 1.

Five quick examples, then the book pages do the rest:

  • If your chapter is “Ear to Ear” or “The Valley of Flowers”, it is Looking Around (NCERT, pp. 11–20 and 84–95).
  • If your chapter is “Omana’s Journey” or “From the Window”, it is Looking Around (NCERT, pp. 47–52 and 53–59).
  • If your chapter is “A River’s Tale” or “Spicy Riddles”, it is Looking Around (NCERT, pp. 106–112 and 199–203).
  • If your chapter is “Our Community” or “Our Sky”, it is Our Wondrous World.
  • If your chapter is “Growing up with Nature” or “Health and Well-being”, it is Our Wondrous World.

What each Class 4 science book PDF teaches

Looking Around (27 chapters, running to page 216) is the classic story-led EVS reader. Its chapters follow children and animals — Nandu the elephant, Amrita, Anita and her honeybees, Omana’s train journey, Chuskit — and carry science and social themes such as animals, family, travel, water, food, cloth and community. It is the long-standing NCERT book most CBSE schools have used.

Our Wondrous World (10 chapters, 164 pages) is the newer book. It begins with the child’s own community and neighbourhood, then moves to nature, health, things around us, how things are made, the environment and the sky. It is activity-heavy, carrying 48 of the 54 activities recorded across the subject.

Both PDFs are official and free on ncert.nic.in and are linked in the table above.
