NCERT Class 6 Poorvi Book: What Each Chapter Teaches

The NCERT Class 6 Poorvi book is the official Class 6 English textbook, running to five chapters and 164 printed pages — and every chapter’s official PDF is on this page.

Beyond the files, this page maps what the book contains: the reading texts in each unit, how long each unit runs, and where a text you were asked about — A Bottle Of Dew, Neem Baba or Deepika Kumari — sits. The counts come from the book itself, so you can find your answer without opening five PDFs.

Every link in the table below is an NCERT file hosted on the official ncert.nic.in domain — the same source the printed edition is published from. The five unit PDFs follow the pattern fepr101.pdf to fepr105.pdf, so each link is verifiably NCERT’s own.

The Unit 1 PDF, for example, is the official file at ncert.nic.in/textbook/pdf/fepr101.pdf — open it to read A Bottle Of Dew and The Raven And The Fox directly in your browser.

The book, measured: what the std 6 English textbook PDF contains

These numbers are read from the official PDFs and rendered on this page, so you can check them against the book:

  • 5 chapters — five units, each a full teaching unit of the Poorvi textbook.
  • 5 verified official PDFs — one per chapter, all on ncert.nic.in.
  • 164 printed pages across the five units.
  • Chapter study pages — the status of each chapter’s page (Available, Drafting or Not yet built) is rendered in the chapter study pages section; only published pages are linked.
  • 0 named sections and 0 exercise questions in this book’s index — an honest detail explained in the next section.
  • The book prints its diagrams without numbers or captions, so this page deliberately publishes no figure count.

What’s inside the NCERT Class 6 Poorvi book

The directory below is the chapter-by-chapter index this site holds for the book — every row comes from the official PDFs.

3 Nurturing Nature — — — —
4 Sports and Wellness — — — —
5 Culture and Tradition — — — —

Poorvi is organised as five themed units rather than numbered chapters — each unit gathers its reading texts and activity blocks around a single theme, from folk tales to national culture.

Reading the columns: a section is one of NCERT’s own numbered headings, a figure is a numbered figure indexed from the book, and a question is an end-of-chapter exercise. Every row shows zero — and that is the book’s design, not missing data.

Poorvi does not number its sections. Each unit is built around one or two reading texts, followed by a repeated activity sequence: Let us discuss, Let us think and reflect, Let us learn, Let us listen, Let us speak, Let us write, Let us explore. These are activity blocks, not numbered headings, so the section count is zero.

Unit 5, “Culture and Tradition,” is the one unit that adds a warm-up before its main reading text: “Let us do these activities before we read.”

If you came expecting a Science-style table of numbered sections, read the zeros as “Poorvi doesn’t number sections” — the reading texts are the real landmarks of each unit, and they are named below.

Chapter 1: Fables and Folk Tales (pp. 1-38)

Built around the folk tale A Bottle Of Dew and the fable The Raven And The Fox, Unit 1 is where the book introduces story forms that carry a moral — the starting point for a student learning to retell a story or spot its lesson.

Chapter 2: Friendship (pp. 39-74)

Unit 2 gathers its texts around friendship — an opening story about an unlikely pair (indexed here only as The Unlikely, with the full title not captured), the poem We are opposites! and A Friend’S Prayer — the unit for a student learning to describe people and read poetry for feeling, where empathy matters as much as plot.

Chapter 3: Nurturing Nature (pp. 75-102)

Unit 3 turns the book toward nature and conservation, pairing the story Neem Baba with the informative text Spices That Heal Us — the unit where a student practises pulling information from a factual text rather than only following a story, tied with Unit 4 as the book’s shortest.

Chapter 4: Sports and Wellness (pp. 103-130)

Unit 4 joins the story Change Of Heart to a reading text on the sportsperson Deepika Kumari, and is the book’s treatment of what sportsmanship, wellness and perseverance build in a person — the unit a student preparing a short profile of a sports figure turns to.

Chapter 5: Culture and Tradition (pp. 131-164)

Unit 5 closes the book with culture, tradition and heritage, bringing together Hamara Bharat —, Kalakritiyon ka Bharat and Gakkad Bharta — pieces that connect what a region makes and eats with how it identifies itself.

How to use the Class 6 English textbook

  • Read the units in book order. The book moves outward from stories (Unit 1) to friendship (Unit 2), the natural world (Unit 3), sports (Unit 4) and national culture (Unit 5), and each unit’s “Let us” blocks are the built-in lesson sequence.
  • Treat the “Let us learn” block as the grammar and vocabulary checkpoint in every unit — the same named step repeats across all five chapters, so once you have done it once, you know what it asks for.
  • Jump by theme when needed. Each unit is self-contained, so a teacher assigning Nurturing Nature for an environment week can set Unit 3 alone (pp. 75-102) without Units 1 and 2.
  • Use the length differences to pace a term. Units 1 and 2 carry the heaviest reading load at 38 and 36 pages; Units 3 and 4 are the shortest at 28 pages each; Unit 5 sits between at 34.
  • End with the syllabus caveat. Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official CBSE syllabus for what is examinable this session.
