NCERT Class 3 Santoor Book: All 12 Chapters, Official PDFs and What Each Teaches

The NCERT Class 3 Santoor book is the official English textbook for Class 3, with 12 chapters across 128 printed pages. Every chapter’s official PDF is on this page, linked straight from ncert.nic.in, so the file you searched for is one scroll away.

What the PDF alone cannot tell you is what is inside each chapter. This page shows the work each unit sets — its word lists, grammar practice, discussion tasks and craft activities — read from the book’s own activity labels, so a parent or student can find the right chapter without opening the whole file.

How to check you have the right Class 3 English textbook PDF

  1. The cover title is Santoor.
  2. The publisher is NCERT, the National Council of Educational Research and Training.
  3. Chapter 1 is Fun with Friends and Chapter 12 is Chandrayaan.
  4. The official files on ncert.nic.in follow the name pattern cesa101.pdf to cesa112.pdf — and the links in the table above are exactly those files, so opening the first file alone is enough to confirm the book’s title and publisher.

If these match, the PDF on this page is the current official Class 3 English textbook.

The Class 3 English PDF at a glance

  • 12 chapters, every one linked to its official NCERT PDF in the table above.
  • 128 printed pages across the book.
  • 0 numbered section headings — Santoor organises each unit by activity labels instead.
  • 7 labelled activity blocks appear in the book; five crafts — a paper bag puppet, a kite, a rangoli, a fruit salad and wind chimes — are spread through Chapters 4, 5, 6, 8 and 11.
  • Practice sits inside each unit as labelled blocks (A, B, C) rather than a separate question set at the end.

Chapter lengths are uneven, which is worth planning around. Fun with Friends and Madhu’s Wish are the longest at 14 pages each; Night is the shortest at 7. For the full set of NCERT textbooks, browse the NCERT books index.

Three of the directory’s columns need explaining for this book. Santoor prints no numbered section headings, so the sections column reads 0 for every chapter, and it prints no separate end-of-chapter question set either, so the questions column reads 0.

The exercise work lives inside each unit as labelled activity blocks — “A. Answer the following”, “B. Think and discuss”, “Let us play a game” — and the activities column counts those blocks.

Chapter 1: Fun with Friends

Fun with Friends opens the book with the theme of friendship, then moves into word work: young ones of animals and arranging words in alphabetical order.

Chapter 2: Badal and Moti

Badal and Moti follows a boy named Badal and his companion Moti, with exercises that practise answering questions, discussing in pairs, and forming past tense words by adding ‘ed’.

Chapter 3: Best Friends

Best Friends continues the friendship theme and introduces the article ‘an’, plus a My Friend activity where students paste a picture and write about it.

Chapter 4: Out in the Garden

Out in the Garden is built around making a Paper Bag Puppet, with the materials required listed before the activity.

Chapter 5: Talking Toys

Talking Toys builds vocabulary around toys with new words and a Picture Glossary, adds a My Top writing task, and ends with Making a Kite.

Chapter 6: Paper Boats

Paper Boats pairs picture-based comprehension with creative work: drawing a rangoli and a crossword puzzle, closing with a Self Assessment.

Chapter 7: The Big Laddoo

The Big Laddoo ties its main text to a Good Food discussion with picture-based questions and a new words list.

Chapter 8: Thank God!

Thank God! works on reading fluency with sight words, follows with comprehension questions, and closes with Chandu’s Fruit Salad.

Chapter 9: Madhu’s Wish

Madhu’s Wish teaches combining two sentences into one, alongside new words, comprehension questions, and a craft activity that lists its materials.

Chapter 10: Night

Night is a short chapter that moves from comprehension questions to a word game.

Chapter 11: Chanda Mama Counts the Stars

Chanda Mama Counts the Stars uses the night sky theme for ‘here and there’ sentence work and a Wind Chimes project, with the materials listed in the chapter.

Chapter 12: Chandrayaan

Chandrayaan, the closing chapter, pairs reading about India’s moon mission with ‘a’ and ‘an’ blank filling practice, Fun with Words, and a final Self Assessment.

How to use the CBSE Class 3 English book PDF at home

  1. Read the chapter’s text first, aloud where possible — Santoor units are written to be read and heard.
  2. Do the A block (comprehension and discussion) immediately after reading, while the text is fresh.
  3. Do the B and C blocks — word work, language practice and games — in a second sitting.
  4. For craft chapters, gather materials before the lesson — a paper bag (Ch 4), paper and string for a kite (Ch 5), colours for a rangoli (Ch 6), fruits for a salad (Ch 8) and materials for wind chimes (Ch 11), all listed inside the chapter.
  5. Use the two Self Assessment blocks — Paper Boats (Ch 6) and Chandrayaan (Ch 12) — as checkpoints before moving on.

The book’s grammar thread is worth knowing, because each rule appears once:

  • The article ‘an’ is introduced in Best Friends (Ch 3).
  • Past tense by adding ‘ed’ is practised in Badal and Moti (Ch 2).
  • Combining two sentences into one appears in Madhu’s Wish (Ch 9).
  • ‘a’ and ‘an’ return in Chandrayaan (Ch 12), so the closing chapter doubles as revision of the article rule.

Pacing: Night (Ch 10) is the shortest chapter at 7 pages and works as a light read, while Fun with Friends (Ch 1) and Madhu’s Wish (Ch 9) are the longest at 14 pages each — give them an extra sitting.

Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official syllabus before planning revision.

Sources and data verification

  • The tables on this page describe Santoor, the NCERT English textbook for Class 3, in its official PDF edition on ncert.nic.in (files cesa101 to cesa112).
  • This page covers that one book only — not other Class 3 subjects and not older English textbooks for the class.
  • The listing is maintained for the current academic session using the NCERT information available to us.
  • NCERT settles textbooks, editions and PDFs; CBSE settles the curriculum, syllabus and examinations.

One honest note about the book: the illustrations in this edition carry no printed captions or numbers, so the tables on this page carry no figure index.
