The NCERT Class 7 Poorvi book is the official English textbook for Class 7 in the current NCERT list, and this page gives you the five official chapter PDFs straight from ncert.nic.in. Each file below is NCERT’s own upload, so you download exactly the book the board prints.
The PDF alone does not tell you what is inside. This page maps the book unit by unit: the reading texts, the Let us skill blocks and the two poems, with the printed page span of every chapter. You can see at a glance what you are about to study before you open a file.

What each unit of the NCERT Class 7 Poorvi book actually teaches
The directory below lists all five chapters with their page spans and the counts you can check in the book.
| Ch. | Chapter | Sections | Activities | Figures | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Learning Together | — | — | — | — |
| 2 | Wit and Humour | — | — | — | — |
| 3 | Dreams and Discoveries | — | — | — | — |
| 4 | Travel and Adventure | — | — | — | — |
| 5 | Bravehearts | — | — | — | — |
Three counts matter in the directory. A section is one of NCERT’s own numbered headings, a figure is a numbered, captioned figure, and a question is an end-of-chapter exercise.
All five chapters show zero in those columns, and the reason is the book’s design. Poorvi organises every chapter as unnumbered Let us blocks, its diagrams are uncaptioned, and its questions sit inside the blocks rather than in a closing exercise set. The zeros record that design, not an empty book.
Chapter 1: Learning Together (pp. 1-42)
This chapter centres on the prose piece The Day The River Spoke. It is a student’s introduction to the book’s working pattern: a reading text followed by the same sequence of Let us blocks. The speaking block practises asking for and giving advice.
A student starting Class 7 who wants the routine of the book before term begins should read it first.
- The Day The River Spoke
- Let us discuss
- Let us think and reflect
- Let us learn
- Let us listen — a listening activity keyed to Speaker No. prompts
- Let us speak — with the language functions Asking for advice and Giving advice
- Let us write
Running to page 42, this chapter prints no numbered exercise set — the comprehension, grammar and writing work all sits inside the Let us blocks that follow the reading.
Chapter 2: Wit and Humour (pp. 43-90)
This chapter uses humour as the context for language work, built around the prose Animals, Birds, And Dr. Dolittle. Its standout is the speaking block, set up as role play with cue cards for everyday problems. Students who find speaking tasks hardest get a low-stakes situation to practise in.
- Animals, Birds, And Dr. Dolittle
- Let us discuss
- Let us think and reflect
- Let us learn
- Let us listen
- Let us speak — role play problems for everyday situations such as dry lips, a sore throat and fatigue
- Cue Cards — the prompt cards that guide each role play
At 48 pages, this is the book’s oral-work chapter: its speaking block is built as problem-and-cue-card role plays rather than an open discussion.
Chapter 3: Dreams and Discoveries (pp. 91-138)
The chapter carries two reading texts: the prose My Brother’s Great Invention and the poem Paper Boats, linked by the theme of imagination and invention. It is the only chapter with a Let us explore block that pushes beyond the text. Students preparing for poetry as well as prose will find both here.
- My Brother’s Great Invention
- Let us read
- Let us discuss
- Let us think and reflect
- Let us learn
- Let us listen
- Let us speak
- Let us write
- Let us explore
- Paper Boats
Spanning 48 pages, it is the only chapter with a Let us explore block, and it pairs its prose with the poem Paper Boats.
Chapter 4: Travel and Adventure (pp. 139-178)
This chapter is a single adventure narrative, The Tunnel, and at 40 pages it is the book’s shortest. Its questions appear inside the block structure, including a numbered II Answer the following questions item. The language block carries a matching exercise. It is a good choice for a quick revision period.
- The Tunnel
- Let us read
- Let us discuss
- Let us think and reflect
- II Answer the following questions
- Let us learn — including the matching task printed as Column 1 and Column 2
- Let us listen
- Let us speak
At just 40 pages this is the shortest chapter in the book, and its questions are printed inside the blocks rather than in a closing exercise section.
Chapter 5: Bravehearts (pp. 179-226)
The final chapter pairs the prose A Homage to Our Brave Soldiers with the Hindi poem Pushp Ki Abhilasha, printed as पुष्प की अभिलाषा. The prose carries a tribute inset naming a real soldier, Lance Naik Albert Ekka (No. 4239746), 14 Guards. Students who want to see an English chapter hold a second-language poem will find it here.
- A Homage to Our Brave Soldiers
- Let us read
- Lance Naik Albert Ekka, No. 4239746, 14 Guards — the tribute inset naming a real soldier
- Let us discuss
- Pushp Ki Abhilasha — the Hindi poem, printed as पुष्प की अभिलाषा
- Let us think and reflect
- Let us learn
- Let us listen
- Let us speak
Closing the book over pages 179 to 226, this is the only chapter that sets a Hindi poem inside the English reader, and its prose honours a named soldier rather than a fictional character.

How to use the Class 7 English book, chapter by chapter
Every chapter opens with its reading text and then follows the same sequence of skill blocks. The table shows what each block asks you to do.
| Let us block | What the block asks you to do |
|---|---|
| Let us discuss | Answer literal questions on the text you just read |
| Let us think and reflect | Infer, interpret and give your opinion |
| Let us learn | Do the language or grammar task of the unit |
| Let us listen | Complete the listening activity |
| Let us speak | Do the oral task — a discussion, a role play or a short talk |
| Let us write | Produce a written piece (printed in Chapters 1 and 3) |
| Let us explore | Go beyond the text (only in Chapter 3) |
Start with Chapter 1, Learning Together, because its speaking block introduces asking for and giving advice — the book’s first sustained oral task. Work the blocks in the order shown above: read, discuss, reflect, learn, listen, speak, then write where the chapter prints a writing block.
For Chapters 3 and 5, read the poem aloud and connect it to the prose theme. In Chapter 3, Paper Boats sits after the invention story; in Chapter 5, the Hindi poem Pushp Ki Abhilasha closes the unit after the tribute to the soldiers.
| Mistake | Correct rule | How to check your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping Let us listen and Let us speak | Every chapter carries both blocks; work them before any writing task | Check the chapter’s block list — if Let us listen and Let us speak appear, do them in order |
| Hunting for a closing exercise set | The questions sit inside the Let us blocks | Open Chapter 4 and find ‘II Answer the following questions’ inside the blocks |
