The NCERT Class 8 Poorvi book is the official NCERT English textbook for Class 8, and this page gives you all five of its units, the official PDFs for each, and what every unit actually contains. The book runs five units across 252 printed pages, and the files you need are in the download table below.
The PDF alone does not show how the book is built. This page adds the page range of each unit, the reading texts inside it, and the task pattern that shapes every unit — so you know what you are opening before you open it.

For the per-unit breakdown of sections, activities and questions, the table in the next section carries the counts for all five units.
What each chapter of the CBSE Class 8 English textbook covers
| Ch. | Chapter | Sections | Activities | Figures | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wit and Wisdom | — | — | — | — |
| 2 | Values and Dispositions | — | — | — | — |
| 3 | Mystery and Magic | — | — | — | — |
| 4 | Environment | — | — | — | — |
| 5 | Science and Curiosity | — | — | — | — |
The three count columns in that table all read zero, and the zeros are the real story of this book. In Poorvi a “section” means one of NCERT’s own numbered headings, an “activity” means a numbered activity, and a “question” means an end-of-chapter exercise — and none of these exist here.
Every unit follows the same unnumbered learning loop, from Let us read to Let us write: read, then discuss, then think and reflect, then learn, listen, speak and write. Units 4 and 5 add one extra step, Let us explore, so every task in the book is an unnumbered prompt rather than a numbered exercise.
Chapter 1: Wit and Wisdom (pp. 1-48)
Unit 1 opens the book with the story The Wit That Won Hearts, built on quick wit and wise thinking. It introduces the Let us… task loop that every unit follows, so it is the unit that shows you how the whole book works.
It runs to 48 pages (pp. 1-48), with no numbered section headings, no numbered activities and no end-of-chapter question set. The tasks sit under unnumbered prompts — discuss, think and reflect, learn, listen, speak and write — so classroom discussion is the real check on your answers.
Chapter 2: Values and Dispositions (pp. 49-100)
Unit 2 is the book’s values unit, built around the story A Tale of Valour, and it is the place to find real history beside fiction: the unit prints the official citation for Major Somnath Sharma, PVC as a reading text inside Let us read.
It is the book’s second-longest unit at 52 pages (pp. 49-100). Like Unit 1, it shows no numbered sections, activities or end-of-chapter questions — the story and the citation both stand under unnumbered headings.
Chapter 3: Mystery and Magic (pp. 101-154)
Unit 3 is a mystery unit built around The Case of the Fifth Word, and it is the only unit whose grammar work carries named sections. Reported speech is taught here through tense changes (time shift), pronoun changes (subject-perspective shift), and time and place changes.
The unit also adds a speaking section on phrases for turn-taking. At 54 pages (pp. 101-154) it is the longest unit in the book.
Its grammar headings are named but unnumbered, so the directory shows zero numbered sections, activities and questions.
Chapter 4: Environment (pp. 155-204)
Unit 4 is a nature unit that pairs two texts, The Cherry Tree and Harvest Hymn, through the usual read-discuss-reflect-write sequence — a good place for reading and discussion practice on environmental themes.
Its 50 pages (pp. 155-204) run the same unnumbered task pattern, with no numbered sections, activities or end-of-chapter questions. It is also the first unit to add the extra step Let us explore.
Chapter 5: Science and Curiosity (pp. 205-252)
Unit 5 closes the book on a science theme, pairing the story Feathered Friend with the text Magnifying Glass and a third reading about ancient Indian scholars.
At 48 pages (pp. 205-252) it is tied with Unit 1 as the shortest unit. Like every unit, it prints no numbered sections, activities or end-of-chapter questions, and it repeats the Let us explore step.

How to use the NCERT English book Class 8 (Poorvi)
- Start at Unit 1, Wit and Wisdom, and follow the unit’s own order: read the story, then discuss, then think and reflect, then learn, listen, speak and write. Every unit repeats this loop, so learning the order in Unit 1 saves time across all five units.
- Treat Unit 3, Mystery and Magic, as the grammar checkpoint before Units 4 and 5. It is the only unit that names its grammar topics — reported-speech time shifts, pronoun shifts, and time-and-place changes — so it is where the book’s formal language work concentrates.
- Use each unit’s Let us think and reflect prompts as a self-check before you attempt Let us write. If you can answer those prompts aloud in your own words, you are ready to write.
- One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, so check the current official syllabus before assuming every unit carries exam weight.
One common search mistake: students look for a single whole-book PDF, but NCERT hosts Poorvi as five separate unit files. The download table above has all five, and the Class 8 hub collects the books and study pages for the whole class.
