The 6th class science textbook: NCERT Class 6 Science (Curiosity), chapter by chapter

The 6th class science textbook is the official NCERT Class 6 Science book, Curiosity — 12 chapters across 254 printed pages — and the chapter-wise official PDFs are one scroll below. This page indexes the English edition and is maintained for the current academic session.

What the PDF alone cannot show you is what sits inside each chapter before you open it. This page adds a measured index of the book itself: how many named sections, hands-on activities and verified numbered figures each chapter carries, which chapters teach through diagrams rather than text, and exactly where a topic — food, magnets, water, the night sky — lives.

Use the download table first, then the chapter-by-chapter breakdown to decide where to start.

What the columns count: a section is one of NCERT’s own numbered headings; a figure is a numbered figure indexed from the book; an activity is a hands-on task printed in the chapter. A question would be an end-of-chapter exercise — but this edition’s ledger did not extract question counts, so that column reads 0, not because the chapters lack exercises.

Chapter 1: Activity 1.1: Let us think and write (pp. 1-8)

With 8 pages and no indexed figures, this opening chapter is the book’s warm-up: it asks you to observe, think and write about the world around you before the real topics begin.

Chapter 2: Diversity in the Living World (pp. 9-34)

Chapter 2 introduces biodiversity — the huge variety of plants and animals around us — and teaches grouping by similarities and differences: venation and roots in plants (Fig 2.5, p. 18), body features in animals (Fig 2.7, p. 21), and how a cactus, a deodar and two camels suit their surroundings (pp. 24-25).

Chapter 3: Mindful Eating: A Path to a Healthy Body (pp. 35-60)

Mindful Eating covers the components of food — carbohydrates, fats, proteins and vitamins — along with the balanced diet (p. 51), kitchen tests for starch and protein (pp. 48-49), millets (p. 53) and food miles from farm to plate (p. 54), with four home experiments built into the chapter.

Chapter 4: Exploring Magnets (pp. 61-78)

Exploring Magnets teaches magnetic and non-magnetic materials (p. 62), the rule that north and south poles always exist in pairs — a single pole cannot exist (p. 64) — finding directions with a freely suspended magnet (Fig 4.5, p. 65), and attraction and repulsion between magnets (Fig 4.8, p. 68).

Chapter 5: Measurement of Length and Motion (pp. 79-100)

Measurement of Length and Motion explains why the handspan fails (p. 80), the standard units — \(1\ \text{km} = 1000\ \text{m}\), \(1\ \text{m} = 100\ \text{cm}\), \(1\ \text{cm} = 10\ \text{mm}\) — correct scale placement and the eye position at ‘B’ (pp. 84-85), measuring a curved line (p. 87), position from a reference point (pp. 87-89), and the three types of motion — linear, circular and oscillatory (pp. 92-93).

Chapter 6: Materials Around Us (pp. 101-122)

Materials Around Us groups objects by what they are made of (p. 103), studies the properties of materials — appearance, hardness, transparency, solubility, heaviness, space and volume (pp. 106-113) — and ends by defining what matter is (p. 115).

Chapter 7: Temperature and its Measurement (pp. 123-142)

Temperature and its Measurement opens with the figure proving that touch cannot measure temperature — hands that disagree about lukewarm water (Fig 7.1, p. 124) — then introduces the three scales, Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin, the clinical thermometer (p. 125), the laboratory thermometer (p. 130) and the room thermometer (p. 134).

Chapter 8: A Journey through (pp. 143-162)

Chapter 8, A Journey through, is about water: evaporation (a spoonful vanishing from a steel plate, Fig 8.1, p. 145), condensation (droplets on a cold tumbler, Fig 8.3, p. 147), the states of water and how to change them (Fig 8.5, p. 152), and how clouds give rain (p. 157).

Chapter 9: Methods of Separation in Everyday Life (pp. 163-182)

Methods of Separation in Everyday Life works through handpicking (p. 164), threshing (p. 164), winnowing (p. 166), sieving (p. 167), decantation (p. 170), filtration (p. 171), magnetic separation (p. 174) and salt from seawater by evaporation (pp. 167-169).

The decision rule: sieving for size, winnowing for weight, decantation and filtration for an insoluble solid, and evaporation for a soluble one.

Chapter 10: Living Creatures: Exploring their Characteristics (pp. 183-206)

Living Creatures sets the living apart from the non-living — living things move, eat, grow, breathe, excrete, respond, reproduce and die — then follows germination (p. 188) and the life cycle of a bean plant (Fig 10.4, p. 196), a mosquito (Fig 10.6, p. 198) and a frog (Fig 10.8, p. 201).

Chapter 11: Air (pp. 207-230)

Air covers the natural resources — air with its composition (Fig 11.1, p. 209), water (p. 211), energy from the Sun (p. 214), forests (p. 216), soil, rocks and minerals (p. 218) and fossil fuels (p. 221) — and sorts them into renewable and non-renewable (p. 223).

Chapter 12: Activity 12.1: Let us draw (pp. 231-254)

The final chapter is the night sky and space: stars and constellations (p. 233), the Pole Star nearly stationary in the North with the Big and Little Dippers (Fig 12.4, p. 235), night-sky watching (p. 236), the Solar System (p. 238), the Milky Way galaxy and the universe (p. 247).

Two patterns decide how to revise. The figure-heavy chapters are Chapter 5 (18 indexed figures), Chapter 4 (16), Chapter 2 (13) and Chapter 9 (12) — revision there should start from the diagrams, because the book teaches through them. The activity-heavy chapters are Chapter 5 (5 activities), Chapter 3 (4) and Chapters 4, 6 and 8 (3 each) — those need hands-on work, not just reading.

And the frame of the book is easy to remember: it opens with an 8-page observation chapter and closes with the night sky, from the Pole Star to the Solar System and the Milky Way.

The book in six blocks: which chapters answer which question

This grouping is our own, made from the book’s own section titles, so a student or parent lands on the right chapter fast.

How to use the Class 6 Science NCERT book — and where the Hindi edition lives

A working order for this specific book:

  1. Treat Chapter 1 as a warm-up — read it once, then start the real sequence at Chapter 2.
  2. Follow Chapters 2 to 12 in order for first learning: later chapters assume the earlier ones, and the sequence moves from grouping to separation, and from measurement to temperature.
  3. For revision, jump from the six-block table straight to the topic chapter — food is Chapter 3, magnets Chapter 4, water Chapters 8 and 9, the night sky Chapter 12.
  4. Do the hands-on chapters at home rather than reading them: Chapter 5 (5 activities), Chapter 3 (4) and Chapters 4, 6, 8 (3 each).
  5. For the figure-heavy chapters — 5 (18 indexed figures), 4 (16), 2 (13) and 9 (12) — study the diagrams first.

A worked measurement example from Chapter 5: a pencil laid along a scale with a broken end spans \(3.0\ \text{cm}\) to \(11.5\ \text{cm}\), so its length is \(11.5\ \text{cm}-3.0\ \text{cm}=8.5\ \text{cm}\). The eye must sit directly above the mark — position B in Fig 5.5 (p. 85) — or the reading shifts.
