NCERT’s Math Mela is built around activities and topic headings rather than numbered sections, so the sections column is zero for every chapter. Instead, each chapter’s teaching is carried by hands-on activity boxes — “Let Us Do”, “Let Us Explore”, and similar tasks — 35 in all across the book.
Formal end-of-chapter exercises are rare: only Chapter 13, “The Transport Museum”, includes them, with 2 questions.
Figures are not listed because the book’s diagrams are unnumbered — this page indexes only what a reader can check against the book.

How to use the CBSE Class 4 Maths book PDF
- Start with Chapters 1 and 2 — the shape and grid vocabulary they build is used everywhere later.
- Do Chapter 4 (Thousands) before the arithmetic chapters: place value underpins the addition, subtraction, multiplication and division that follow.
- Work through Chapter 7 for addition and subtraction, then Chapter 9 for multiplication and division, and use Chapter 13 to strengthen tables and dividing by 10 and 100.
- Treat Chapters 6, 8 and 12 as hands-on measurement work you can do with household objects — rulers, weighing scales and clocks.
- Use Chapter 5 alongside Chapter 9: equal sharing is division in everyday language.
One worked example connects those last two chapters. Thirty-six marbles shared equally among six children give six each; the same thirty-six shared among nine children give four each. The sharing language of Chapter 5 is exactly the equal-groups idea Chapter 9 turns into division:
\[ 36 \div 6 = 6 \quad \text{and} \quad 36 \div 9 = 4 \]
A common mistake is treating the activity boxes as optional games. In this book the activities are the practice: Chapter 9 has zero activity boxes yet carries the core multiplication and division teaching, so skipping it leaves a real gap.
| Mistake | Correct rule | How to check your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping chapters that show 0 activities in the directory | Every chapter teaches something; Chapter 9 has no activity boxes yet carries multiplication and division | Compare the activity column of the directory with the strand map — zero activities means the problems are the practice, not that the chapter is optional |
| Treating activity boxes as optional games | The activities are the real practice — the book has only 2 formal end-of-chapter questions, both in Chapter 13 | If the only exercises completed are Chapter 13’s two questions, most of the book’s practice has been skipped |
| Starting multiplication before place value | Work Chapter 4 (Thousands) first — grouping and regrouping past one thousand underpins all four operations | If the grouping and regrouping tasks in Chapter 4 are shaky, the tables in Chapters 9 and 13 will need rework |
