Math-Magic does not divide its chapters into numbered section headings — none of the 14 chapters carries one. Instead, each chapter is organised under named headings such as “The Fish Tale”, “Find out” and “Practice Time”. An activity, in this book, is a hands-on task printed in the chapter; there are 9 such activities across the 14 chapters.
In Math-Magic, practice is built into the chapters as “Practice Time” blocks rather than appearing in a separate exercise section at the end. To revise a chapter, go back and redo those Practice Time tasks.
Chapter 1: The Fish Tale (pp. 1-15)
The Fish Tale builds multiplication and money word problems around a fishing village — market rates for fish, boat speeds, and the women’s Meenkar Bank cooperative all feed the arithmetic.
Chapter 2: Shapes and Angles (pp. 16-33)
Shapes and Angles introduces angles with the book’s own angle tester and degree clock, then finds angles in matchstick puzzles, names, towers, and clock hands.
Chapter 3: How Many Squares? (16 pages)
How Many Squares? starts area by counting square units on stamps, footprints, and triangles, then moves to puzzles and tiling with five-square shapes.
Chapter 4: Parts and Wholes (pp. 50-70)
Parts and Wholes teaches fractions and equal parts of a whole through a flag, a chocolate bar, hats, triangles, and Ramu’s vegetable field.
Chapter 5: Does it Look the Same? (16 pages)
Does it Look the Same? explores symmetry through mirror reflection, drop-of-colour patterns, and half, quarter, and one-sixth turns.
Chapter 6: Be My Multiple, I’ll be Your Factor (12 pages)
Be My Multiple, I’ll be Your Factor teaches multiples and factors with the Meow game, dice games, tamarind seeds, grid colouring, and common multiples and common factors.
Chapter 7: Can You See the Pattern? (13 pages)
Can You See the Pattern? develops number patterns with magic squares and magic hexagons, calendar tricks, left-right patterns, and smart adding shortcuts.
Chapter 8: Mapping Your Way (14 pages)
Mapping Your Way reads the maps of Delhi landmarks such as the Red Fort and the Central Hexagon, using routes and directions to link maps to photos and to make sense of scale.
Chapter 9: Boxes and Sketches (8 pages)
Boxes and Sketches covers nets that fold into cubes, shapes for open boxes, floor maps, and a simple way to draw a cube.
Chapter 10: Tenths and Hundredths (12 pages)
Tenths and Hundredths introduces decimals as tenths and hundredths through frog lengths, market prices, sports day results, and foreign currency.
Chapter 11: Area and its Boundary (13 pages)
Area and its Boundary compares area and perimeter with stamps, belts, a postcard puzzle, and a king’s story about sharing land.
Chapter 12: Smart Charts (pp. 159-169)
Smart Charts turns tally marks on the road, advertisements, and a plant’s growth into tables and charts, then reads a family tree and a Rabbits in Australia graph.
Chapter 13: Ways to Multiply and Divide (17 pages)
Ways to Multiply and Divide practises multiplication and division through real-life stories — a cashier’s calculations, a cook’s catering, a landlord’s fields, and a farmer’s loan.
Chapter 14: How Big? How Heavy? (18 pages)
How Big? How Heavy? measures volume and capacity with a homemade measuring bottle, matchboxes, paper cubes, and a trek to Gangotri.
5th class maths book PDF: finding the chapter you need
A maths strand is the thread a topic belongs to. The table below maps all 14 chapters to a strand, so you can jump straight to the chapter that matches the topic you are revising.
- Number work — multiplication, division, and money sums
- Geometry and spatial reasoning — angles, symmetry, squares, nets, and maps
- Fractions and decimals — equal parts of a whole, then tenths and hundredths
- Measurement — area, perimeter, volume, and capacity
- Data handling — tally marks, tables, and charts
| Chapter | Maths strand |
|---|---|
| 1. The Fish Tale | Number work and money |
| 2. Shapes and Angles | Geometry — angles and turns |
| 3. How Many Squares? | Geometry — area by square units |
| 4. Parts and Wholes | Fractions of a whole |
| 5. Does it Look the Same? | Geometry — symmetry and turns |
| 6. Be My Multiple, I’ll be Your Factor | Multiples and factors |
| 7. Can You See the Pattern? | Number patterns |
| 8. Mapping Your Way | Maps, directions, and scale |
| 9. Boxes and Sketches | Geometry — nets and cubes |
| 10. Tenths and Hundredths | Decimals and measurement |
| 11. Area and its Boundary | Measurement — area and perimeter |
| 12. Smart Charts | Data handling |
| 13. Ways to Multiply and Divide | Number work — multiplication and division |
| 14. How Big? How Heavy? | Measurement — volume and capacity |
One common mistake is treating Chapter 3, How Many Squares?, as a counting puzzle only. It actually introduces area by square units, the idea Chapter 11, Area and its Boundary, then builds on. Do the stamp and footprint work in Chapter 3 properly and Chapter 11 reads like revision.

NCERT maths book Class 5 PDF: how to use it after the free download
- Start with Chapter 1, The Fish Tale. Its multiplication and money word problems give every later chapter a context to hang on.
- Do Chapter 6, Be My Multiple, I’ll be Your Factor, next so multiples and factors are in place before formal multiplication appears.
- Then work Chapter 13, Ways to Multiply and Divide, for formal multiplication and division practice.
- Finish Chapter 4, Parts and Wholes, before Chapter 10, Tenths and Hundredths — fractions of a whole make the decimals easier to picture.
- Pair Chapter 3, How Many Squares?, with Chapter 11, Area and its Boundary, because both build on square units.
- Leave Chapter 12, Smart Charts, for the end — data handling is the most self-contained strand and works as a light finish.
One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, so check the current official syllabus before exam season. And because the book prints no end-of-chapter exercise blocks, treat every “Practice Time” block as your checkpoint — finish it before you call the chapter done.
