NCERT Books Class 11 Home Science: Both Textbooks & PDFs

NCERT Books Class 11 Home Science are printed as two textbooks, not one, and both are linked on this page. The title on the cover of each is Human Ecology and Family Sciences — Part I and Part II — so the words “Home Science” appear on neither cover.

This split confuses more students than it should. Chapters 1 to 7 sit in Part I, chapters 8 to 11 sit in Part II, and the printed page numbers run continuously from 1 to 220 across both books.

A chapter number alone does not tell you which cover to open, and a teacher’s “Home Science book” is easy to mistake for a book with a different title.

The table below names both books with their chapter ranges and page spans. The sections after it explain how to tell which part your chapter is in.

The two books, side by side

Which book has your chapter?

Start with the ten-second rule: chapters 1 to 7 are in Part I; chapters 8 to 11 are in Part II.

Part I holds these chapters:

Part II holds these chapters:

• Chapter 9: Our Apparel
• Chapter 10: Adulthood
• Chapter 11: Care and Maintenance of Fabrics

If your homework gives a page number instead of a chapter, use the pagination test: any page number above 150 proves the chapter is in Part II, because Part I ends at page 150 and Part II begins at page 151.

Choosing by topic is riskier, because nutrition and fabrics each appear in both books:

• Nutrition: adolescent diet is Chapter 3 in Part I; infant and childhood nutrition is Chapter 8 in Part II.
• Fabrics: fibres, yarns and fabric production is Chapter 5 in Part I; apparel and fabric care is Chapters 9 and 11 in Part II.

The human life span is split the same way: adolescence is Chapter 2 in Part I, while childhood is Chapter 8 and adulthood is Chapter 10 in Part II. So “the food chapter” or “the childhood chapter” is ambiguous without a chapter number.

Finally, match the name your teacher used. “Home Science”, “HEFS”, “Human Ecology and Family Sciences” and “Part I / Part II” all name these two books — the first three are the same subject under different names.

What each part teaches

Part I is the foundation half of the subject. It starts with the learner — understanding oneself in adolescence — then moves through food, nutrition, health and fitness; managing resources such as money, time and energy; textile fibres and fabrics; media and communication technology; and the family within the community and society. Chapters 1 to 7 live here.

Part II carries the rest of the human life span — childhood and adulthood — and then puts Part I’s fabric knowledge to work: selecting clothes for different stages of life, and caring for and maintaining fabrics. Chapters 8 to 11 live here.
