The NCERT Class 12 English book is not one book but three: Flamingo, Vistas and Kaleidoscope. Together they run to 31 chapters across 297 printed pages, and all three official textbooks are linked on this page. If you know the class and subject but not which book your chapter is in, this page settles it in one screen.
The split matters because all three books number their own chapters from 1. A reference to “Chapter 3” could mean Deep Water (Flamingo), A Wedding in Brownsville (Kaleidoscope) or Journey to the end of the Earth (Vistas) — the chapter name identifies the book, and the number alone does not.
Find your chapter’s book in the table below, then open that book’s page for the full chapter list and PDFs.
| Book | Chapters | Printed pages | Book page |

Which Class 12 English book is yours: Flamingo, Vistas or Kaleidoscope?
Three quick checks land you in the right book before you download anything:
- What your teacher called it. If the assignment names Flamingo, Vistas or Kaleidoscope, that name is the book — no further checking needed.
- What kind of text it is. Flamingo is the main reader (prose plus poems); Vistas is the supplementary reader (six shorter pieces); Kaleidoscope is the widest mix (short stories, poetry and non-fiction).
- What the chapter is called. Match the name against the ranges below — the name, not the number, identifies the book.
Flamingo runs chapters 1–11: eight prose chapters and three poems, including Indigo, The Rattrap and Keeping Quiet.
Vistas runs chapters 1–6: The Third Level, The Tiger King, Journey to the end of the Earth, The Enemy, On The Face Of It and Memories of Childhood.
Kaleidoscope runs chapters 1–14: a short-story section (including Eveline, A Wedding in Brownsville and Tomorrow), a poetry section and a non-fiction unit.
Three mistakes catch most students:
- The numbering trap. Every book restarts at Chapter 1, so “Chapter 3” on its own is ambiguous.
- Indigo is Flamingo, not Vistas. It is about Gandhi, so it reads like a history chapter — but it is Flamingo chapter 5.
- The Enemy is Vistas, not Flamingo. It is Vistas chapter 4, with the PDF code levt104.
One more clue: in the CBSE scheme, English Core is taught from Flamingo and Vistas, while English Elective uses Kaleidoscope. Schools differ, so confirm with your teacher which course your school offers.
The chapters in each Class 12 English textbook
Flamingo is the main reader for Class 12 English. Its eleven chapters hold eight prose pieces — the opening prose unit, Lost Spring, Deep Water, The Rattrap, Indigo, Poets and Pancakes, The Interview and Going Places — followed by three poems, Keeping Quiet and A Thing of Beauty among them.
Vistas is the supplementary reader: six shorter pieces of fiction, travel writing and autobiography — The Third Level, The Tiger King, Journey to the end of the Earth, The Enemy, On The Face Of It and Memories of Childhood. It is the smallest of the three books by chapter count.
Kaleidoscope is the widest mix of the three. Its fourteen chapters open with five short-story units — the opening section on short stories, Eveline, A Wedding in Brownsville, Tomorrow and One Centimetre — move into a substantial poetry section, and close with a non-fiction unit.
Where a Class 12 English chapter lives: Indigo, The Enemy and your set texts
If you know only the chapter name, this short lookup covers the chapters students most often misplace:
- Indigo → Flamingo chapter 5. Despite its Gandhi subject matter, it is not a history chapter and not a Vistas text; open the official Flamingo chapter PDF at ncert.nic.in (lefl105.pdf) to confirm before downloading.
- The Enemy → Vistas chapter 4. It is a long wartime story, not a Flamingo text; the official Vistas chapter PDF, levt104.pdf, is free on ncert.nic.in.
- Eveline → Kaleidoscope chapter 2. It belongs to the short-story opening of the elective anthology, in the official Kaleidoscope chapter PDF lekl102.pdf on ncert.nic.in.
- Tomorrow → Kaleidoscope chapter 4, and at 32 printed pages it is the longest single unit in any of the three books; its official chapter PDF is lekl104.pdf on ncert.nic.in.
- The Tiger King → Vistas chapter 2.
- Lost Spring, Deep Water, The Rattrap, Poets and Pancakes, The Interview and Going Places → Flamingo chapters 2–8.
Before you open any download, check NCERT’s file code: the official PDF filenames encode the book — lefl = Flamingo, levt = Vistas, lekl = Kaleidoscope. A file that starts with lefl10x is Flamingo, whatever page linked it.
One naming note: NCERT labels four units with section headers rather than titles — the opening “Prose” chapter of Flamingo, its “Poetry” unit, and the “Short stories” and “Non-fiction” units of Kaleidoscope. If your teacher assigns “the prose chapter” or “the non-fiction unit”, those labels are the official chapter names in NCERT’s listing.
How to get the 12th English textbook PDF from the NCERT site
All three books are published by NCERT, and every chapter is available as a free official PDF on the NCERT website at ncert.nic.in — no login, no payment. Each chapter is its own PDF file, and the filename prefix tells you the book before you open it.
For example, the Indigo chapter of Flamingo is the file lefl105.pdf on NCERT’s official textbook site — open it in any browser and you can read the chapter free, which is the quickest proof that these files need no login.
The opening chapter of each book follows the same pattern: lefl101.pdf is Flamingo’s opening prose unit, levt101.pdf is The Third Level in Vistas, and lekl101.pdf is the short-story opening of Kaleidoscope.
One honest boundary: NCERT publishes textbooks, not digests. A “12th English digest” or “guide” is a commercial product from a private publisher, so this page links only official NCERT chapter files — if a site offers you a digest PDF, it is not from NCERT.
Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical. These are NCERT textbooks, not “CBSE books” — check the current official CBSE syllabus for what is examinable this session.
