This book at a glance

Here is the shape of the book in one screen, followed by a map for finding any named text.

  • 14 chapters across three parts: Short Stories, Poetry and Non-fiction.
  • 14 official chapter PDFs, one per chapter, linked in the download table above.
  • 135 printed pages, with the reading load front-loaded: the five stories take up 89 of them.
  • No numbered section headings: the book is organised as three labelled parts, and each chapter’s work sits in unnumbered exercise blocks.

The three parts differ in length and in how their exercises are built:

Part Chapters Pages Exercise spine
Short Stories Ch 1–5 89 Stop and Think → Understanding the Text → Talking about the Text → Language Work
Poetry Ch 6–13 28 Understanding the Poem or Responding to the Poem, plus Language Study; three chapters carry a ‘Try this out’ activity
Non-fiction Ch 14 18 The same spine as the stories

The spine matters because it lets you predict the work. Stop and Think questions appear inside a story while you read; Understanding the Text checks comprehension afterwards; Talking about the Text opens discussion; Language Work drills one grammar or pronunciation point. The story chapters are the long ones — 89 pages together — but the exercise set is identical every time.

If you have been assigned a named text, use this map to jump to the right chapter:

‘Eveline’ Ch 2
‘A Wedding in Brownsville’ Ch 3
‘Tomorrow’ Ch 4
‘One Centimetre’ Ch 5
‘A Lecture Upon the Shadow’ Ch 6

‘Trees’ Ch 10
‘The Wild Swans at Coole’ Ch 11
‘Time and Time Again’ Ch 12

The Class 12 English book chapters, one by one

The directory below lists every chapter with the counts a revising student actually wants — sections, activities and exercise questions:

Ch. Chapter Sections Activities Figures Questions
1 Short stories — — — 3
2 Eveline — — — 4
3 A Wedding in Brownsville — — — 6
4 Tomorrow — — — 5
5 One Centimetre — — — 4
6 Poetry — 1 — 5
7 Poems by Milton — — — 7
8 Poems by Blake — 1 — 4
9 A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment — 1 — 6
10 Trees — — — —
11 The Wild Swans at Coole — — — 4
12 Time and Time Again — — — —
13 Blood — — — —
14 Non-fiction — — — 5

Three columns matter here. A ‘section’ would be one of NCERT’s own numbered headings, and this book prints none: each chapter organises its work into unnumbered exercise blocks, so that column is zero for every chapter. An ‘activity’ is a ‘Try this out’ exercise; a ‘question’ is an end-of-chapter exercise question.

The counts also show the book’s rhythm — all five story chapters run the same four exercise blocks, five of the eight poem chapters ask Understanding the Poem questions, and the other three poems close with Responding to the Poem. Only three chapters, all in the Poetry part, carry a ‘Try this out’ activity.

Chapter 1: Short stories

The opening chapter contains the story ‘I Sell my Dreams’ and sets the pattern every story chapter follows: Stop and Think questions while reading, then Understanding the Text, Talking about the Text and Language Work.

Chapter 2: Eveline

The story chapter ‘Eveline’ is a 9-page text whose Language Work drills parallelism — the grammar point that sets it apart from the other story chapters.

Chapter 3: A Wedding in Brownsville

‘A Wedding in Brownsville’, the longest story chapter at 18 pages, teaches sentence variety in its Language Work — varying sentence length and structure for effect.

Chapter 4: Tomorrow

‘Tomorrow’ is the longest chapter in the whole book at 32 pages, and its Language Work introduces allusion as a figure of speech.

Chapter 5: One Centimetre

‘One Centimetre’ closes the Short Stories part, and its Language Work begins the figures-of-speech study with simile.

Chapter 6: Poetry

The Poetry part opens with A Lecture Upon the Shadow and a ‘Try this out’ activity — one of the three activity exercises in the book.

Chapter 7: Poems by Milton

‘Poems by Milton’ pairs two poems — On Time and On Shakespear. as printed — with Understanding the Poem and Language Study exercises.

Chapter 8: Poems by Blake

‘Poems by Blake’ sets The Divine Image against The Human Abstract, with Understanding the Poem, Language Work and a ‘Try this out’ activity.

Chapter 9: A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment

‘A Vision in a Dream: A Fragment’, a 4-page dream-vision fragment, carries the third ‘Try this out’ activity in the book.

Chapter 10: Trees

‘Trees’, a 2-page poem, is followed by Responding to the Poem and Language Study prompts.

Chapter 11: The Wild Swans at Coole

‘The Wild Swans at Coole’, a 2-page lyric, asks Understanding the Poem questions and closes with Language Study.

Chapter 12: Time and Time Again

‘Time and Time Again’, another 2-page poem, is followed only by Responding to the Poem prompts — the one poetry chapter with no Language Study section.

Chapter 13: Blood

‘Blood’, at 5 pages the longest of the closing poem chapters, ends with Language Study and a short Suggested Readings list.

Chapter 14: Non-fiction

The Non-fiction chapter returns to the story-chapter pattern around the essay ‘Freedom and Discipline’, with Language Work on sentence types and rhetorical questions.

How to use the Class 12 English book

Read the book in the order it was built, and the repeated exercise pattern does half the work for you:

  1. Learn the shape first: three parts — Short Stories, Poetry, Non-fiction — and which part an assigned text belongs to.
  2. Read the stories in order (Ch 1–5), answering the Stop and Think prompts as you read, then working through Understanding the Text and Talking about the Text.
  3. Treat the Language Work after each story as a mini grammar course in sequence: emphasis (Ch 1), parallelism (Ch 2), sentence variety (Ch 3), allusion (Ch 4), simile (Ch 5).
  4. For the poems (Ch 6–13), read each poem aloud first, then answer Understanding the Poem or Responding to the Poem; complete the three ‘Try this out’ activities as they appear.
  5. Finish with the Non-fiction essay ‘Freedom and Discipline’ (Ch 14), which reuses the story-chapter pattern.
  6. Use the download table above to jump straight to an assigned chapter — and schedule ‘Tomorrow’ (32 pages) as the longest single chapter of the book.

One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, so check the current official CBSE syllabus before deciding what to revise.

Kaliedoscope’s sibling reader, Flamingo, is the other NCERT English textbook for Class 12; it is not covered on this page, so Flamingo chapters do not appear in the tables above.
