NCERT Class 12 English Book Vistas: Chapters and PDFs

The NCERT Class 12 English book Vistas is the supplementary reader for Class 12 English, with six chapters across 68 printed pages — and this page gives you the official NCERT PDF of every chapter plus what is actually inside each one.

The PDF alone does not show, at a glance, how the book is built: chapter lengths run from 6 to 23 pages, one chapter is a play, another pairs two memoirs, and every chapter opens with a "Before you read" prompt and closes with "Reading with Insight" questions.

This page lays that structure out chapter by chapter, so you can choose what to read and how to pace it.

What this page covers at a glance

Here is what you are working with before the chapter-by-chapter detail.

  • Six chapters in the NCERT Class 12 English book Vistas, all covered on this page.
  • All six official PDFs are linked in the download table above and hosted on ncert.nic.in.
  • 68 printed pages in the official edition, with chapter lengths from 6 to 23 pages.
  • Longest chapter: The Enemy (23 pages). Shortest: Journey to the end of the Earth (6 pages).
  • The study-page status of each chapter — ready or in progress — is rendered further down the page.

These counts describe the six Vistas chapters listed on this page, not every Class 12 English title — Flamingo, the main textbook, is a separate book.

Class 12 English book chapters: what is inside Vistas

2 The Tiger King — — — —
3 Journey to the end of the Earth — — — —
4 The Enemy — — — —
5 On The Face Of It — — — —

The directory above counts, per chapter, the structural markers the book itself prints: named sections, activities and questions. Vistas carries no numbered syllabus-style sections, so the structure that matters is the sequence of printed parts — the "Before you read" prompt that opens each chapter, the text itself, and the closing "Reading with Insight" questions.

The chapter notes below walk through those parts in order.

Chapter 1: The Third Level (7 pages)

The Third Level opens Vistas with a continuous story, and its only printed structural markers are the "Before you read" prompt and the closing "Reading with Insight" questions. At 7 pages it is one of the shorter chapters, so it is the natural place to learn how every Vistas chapter is framed before you begin the longer texts.

Chapter 2: The Tiger King (10 pages)

The Tiger King follows the same two-part frame as the opening chapter: a "Before you read" prompt to set the scene, then a closing "Reading with Insight" set after the text. At 10 pages it sits in the middle of the book’s length range and reads comfortably in one sitting.

Chapter 3: Journey to the end of the Earth (6 pages)

Journey to the end of the Earth is the shortest chapter in the book at 6 pages, and its text is split into three titled parts — "Part of history", "Human impact" and "Walk on the ocean" — so it reads in clear stages rather than one continuous block.

Chapter 4: The Enemy (23 pages)

The Enemy is the longest chapter by far at 23 pages — more than a third of the entire book — so plan two sittings rather than one. Its printed framing is the standard "Before you Read" prompt — note the capital R in NCERT’s heading for this chapter — and the closing "Reading with Insight" questions.

Chapter 5: On The Face Of It (15 pages)

On The Face Of It is the play in this book: the text is printed in Scene One, Scene Two and Scene Three, followed by "The End" and the closing question section. At 15 pages it is the second-longest chapter, and reading it aloud is the natural way to work with a play.

Chapter 6: Memories of Childhood (7 pages)

Memories of Childhood holds two autobiographical memoirs under one title, each with its own printed section heading: "The Cutting of My Long Hair" by Zitkala-Sa and "We Too are Human Beings" by Bama. At 7 pages it is a short closing chapter that rounds off the book.

How the six Vistas chapters compare

The table below is the quickest way to plan your reading: length and text type decide how many sittings each chapter needs.

Chapter Pages What kind of text Reading pace
1. The Third Level 7 story one sitting
2. The Tiger King 10 story one sitting
3. Journey to the end of the Earth 6 text in three titled parts one sitting
4. The Enemy 23 long story two sittings
5. On The Face Of It 15 play in three scenes two sittings
6. Memories of Childhood 7 paired memoirs one sitting

Three of the six chapters are stories; the other three are a three-part narrative, a play and paired memoirs.

Length sets the reading habit: the two longest chapters — The Enemy at 23 pages and On The Face Of It at 15 — are the two that most need two sittings, and the four shorter chapters each fit one. The four one-sitting chapters are also the easiest to reread quickly before an exam or class discussion.

Vistas chapter study pages and the Class 12 English Flamingo chapters

Each Vistas chapter below has its own study page when one is ready; use the chapter table above to open the official PDF in the meantime. How to use the Class 12 English book Vistas

  1. Start with the two short framing chapters — The Third Level (7 pages) and The Tiger King (10 pages) — to learn how every Vistas chapter is structured before you take on longer texts.
  2. Take Chapter 4, The Enemy, in two sittings. At 23 pages it is more than a third of the whole book, so splitting the reading keeps it manageable.
  3. Read Chapter 5, On The Face Of It, aloud. It is a play in three scenes, and dialogue reads best spoken.
  4. Use the book’s own frame. Work with the "Before you read" prompt before the text, then the "Reading with Insight" questions after it.
  5. Keep Vistas beside Flamingo. The two books belong to the same Class 12 English course, with Vistas as the supplementary reader and Flamingo as the main textbook.

One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official syllabus for what is examinable this session.

If you want to open a chapter directly, the official NCERT PDF for The Third Level is at ncert.nic.in/textbook/pdf/levt101.pdf — the same file linked in the download table above — so you can read it alongside the chapter notes on this page.

Three nearby pages help if you are working through Class 12 English: all NCERT books on this site, the Class 12 hub covering the other Class 12 subjects, and the companion main textbook Flamingo, which holds its own chapters and poems.
