NCERT Class 10 Economics Book: Chapters, Contents, and Official PDFs

The NCERT Class 10 Economics book — Understanding Economic Development — has five chapters, and the official PDF of every chapter is linked on this page.

What this page adds is a measured map of the book: each chapter’s verified page range, its exercise count, where the three activities sit, and a plain-language account of what the chapter teaches. Every number in the tables below comes from the textbook itself, not from a syllabus guess.

The five chapters run from development to consumer rights. You can check a chapter’s length and workload before you open a single PDF — which is what the sections below are for.

The Class 10 Economics book PDF at a glance

  • 5 chapters across 91 printed pages.
  • All five PDFs verified on ncert.nic.in.
  • 174 exercise questions in total, expanding to 272 parts.
  • 3 activities, all in Chapter 1.
  • 0 named section headings recorded — the book runs on unnumbered topic headings such as “Sectors Of Economic Activities”, so the directory below shows 0s where other books show section counts.
  • Chapter study pages: the chapter-pages section below lists which of the five chapters already have one, with an honest status for the rest.

One honest gap: this page publishes no figure index for this book, because NCERT prints its diagrams without numbered captions this index can capture.

What is actually inside each chapter

Ch. Chapter Sections Activities Figures Questions
1 Notes for the Teacher — 3 — 30
2 Sectors of the Indian Economy — — — 23
3 Money and Credit — — — 35
4 Globalisation and the Indian Economy — — — 44
5 Consumer Rights — — — 42

The directory below renders three counts per chapter. A section would be one of NCERT’s numbered headings — this book records none, because its chapters run on unnumbered topic headings such as “Sectors Of Economic Activities” and “Money As A Medium Of Exchange”.

An activity is an item NCERT labels Activity — three exist, all in Chapter 1. A question is an end-of-chapter exercise, and some questions carry several parts: 174 questions expand to 272 parts across the book.

Compare the chapters in prose: Chapter 4 carries the heaviest exercise load, with 44 questions that expand to 65 parts. Chapter 2’s 23 questions contain 53 parts — the highest part count per question in the book. Chapter 1 holds all three of the book’s activities.

Chapter 1: Notes for the Teacher (pp. 2–17)

Chapter 1 defines what development means for a person and for the whole nation: it weighs average income against other goals such as public facilities and the Human Development Report, and it ends by asking why sustainability must be part of the answer.

Chapter 2: Sectors of the Indian Economy (pp. 18–37)

This chapter sorts all production into primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, shows how their shares change as an economy grows, and divides work into organised and unorganised sectors — the chapter behind most data-based answers.

Chapter 3: Money and Credit (pp. 38–53)

Money and Credit follows exchange from barter to modern forms of money such as bank deposits and cheques, then explains how banks lend from deposits and why the same credit can help one family and push another into debt.

Chapter 4: Globalisation and the Indian Economy (pp. 54–73)

This chapter shows how production has spread across countries through multinational companies, and how foreign trade and technology have integrated markets — the book’s most outward-looking chapter.

Chapter 5: Consumer Rights

The final chapter places the consumer in the marketplace, sets out the rights a buyer holds, and shows through real disputes — a bank fined for sloppy service, an insurer made to pay a denied claim — how consumer protection works in practice.

Individual chapter study pages

Each chapter with a published study page is linked below; chapters still being prepared stay unlinked, with their status shown instead.

How to use the CBSE Class 10 Economics textbook

The five chapters build on one another. Chapter 1 sets the yardstick — development goals. Chapter 2 organises the economy into sectors. Chapter 3 explains the money and credit behind those sectors. Chapter 4 applies all of it to the world. Chapter 5 stands alone.

Choosing a starting chapter in the Class 10 economics textbook

Chapter Pages What it is best for
Chapter 1 pp. 2–17 Defining development: income, goals, public facilities, sustainability
Chapter 2 pp. 18–37 The three sectors and how their shares change over time
Chapter 3 pp. 38–53 Money, bank deposits, cheques and credit situations
Chapter 4 pp. 54–73 MNCs, foreign trade and integration of markets
Chapter 5 19 pages Consumer rights and the real disputes that illustrate them

Use the table when you are short on time. If you want the chapter that reads fastest, start with Chapter 5; if you want the one that explains the most about the rest of the book, start with Chapter 1.

A study order that builds understanding:

  1. Chapter 1 first, because every later chapter assumes its definition of development.
  2. Chapter 2 next — sectors are the structure of the economy.
  3. Chapter 3 after that — money and credit explain how the sectors are financed.
  4. Chapter 4 then, applying sectors and credit to the world economy.
  5. Chapter 5 any time — it is self-contained and light on new vocabulary.

One-evening plan. If you have a single night, Chapter 5 is the fastest win — the rights are few, the dispute cases make them memorable, and it does not depend on the earlier chapters.

Where the revision time goes. Chapter 4 (44 questions) and Chapter 2 (one of the two 20-page chapters) deserve the most effort, and Chapter 1 holds all three of the book’s activities.

One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official syllabus before deciding what to drop.
