Chapter 8: Fractions in Disguise (pp. 1–32)

This chapter teaches percentages as fractions with denominator 100 — \( x\% = \frac{x}{100} \) — across three sections: Fractions as Percentages (p. 1), Percentage of Some Quantity (p. 6) and Using Percentages (p. 14).

With 45 of the book’s 146 in-text questions, it carries the heaviest practice load of the seven chapters and is the natural starting point for anyone who finds percentage problems slow.

Chapter 9: The Baudhāyana-Pythagoras Theorem (pp. 33–54)

Chapter 9 develops the Baudhāyana-Pythagoras theorem — the relation among the three sides of a right-angled triangle — by first doubling a square (p. 33) and halving a square (p. 36) before reaching right-triangles having integer sidelengths (p. 48).

Its 16 questions practise the theorem directly, and the visual build-up makes it the chapter for students who find an abstract formula hard to hold onto.

Chapter 10: Proportional Reasoning-2 (pp. 55–69)

This chapter continues the proportionality strand from earlier classwork — the 2 in its title signals that.

From Proportionality—A Quick Recap (p. 55) it moves to Ratios in Maps (p. 56), Ratios with More than 2 Terms (p. 57), Dividing a Whole in a Given Ratio (p. 58), A Slice of the Pie (p. 60) and Inverse Proportions (p. 63) — 22 questions that pair naturally with the percentage work of Chapter 8.

Chapter 11: Exploring Some Geometric Themes (pp. 70–102)

At 33 pages this is the longest chapter in the book, and it reads as exploration rather than drill.

Fractals (p. 70) introduces self-similar patterns such as the Sierpinski Carpet, Sierpinski Gasket and Koch Snowflake, while Visualising Solids (p. 75) turns to shapes in space — a good fit for students who learn best from patterns and shapes, with 18 questions.

Chapter 12: Tales by Dots and Lines (pp. 103–134)

This is the book’s statistics chapter.

The Balancing Act (p. 103) treats the mean as a balance point — the sum of the distances of the values to its left equals the sum to its right — and Visualising and Interpreting Data (p. 116) moves on to graphs and data displays, with 14 questions, essential for anyone going further into data handling.

Chapter 13: Algebra Play (pp. 135–147)

At 13 pages and 12 questions, this is the shortest chapter in the book, and it builds algebraic thinking through play.

‘Think of a number’ tricks (p. 135), number pyramids (p. 137), fun with grids (p. 141), the largest product (p. 142) and decoding divisibility tricks (p. 144) — the chapter to finish fast before revision.

Chapter 14: Area (pp. 148–176)

The final chapter gathers the area formulas under one heading, Rectangle and Squares (p. 148): the triangle as \( \frac{1}{2} \times \text{base} \times \text{height} \), polygons split into triangles, the parallelogram as \( \text{base} \times \text{height} \), and the rhombus formula.

Its 19 questions fix the formulas, and the chapter builds directly on the square and triangle work of Chapter 9.

A sensible order of work for this book, naming chapters as you go:

  1. Chapter 8: Fractions in Disguise first — 45 questions make it the practice anchor of the book, and its percentage work returns in Chapters 10 and 12.
  2. Chapter 10: Proportional Reasoning-2 second — it reuses ratio and percentage ideas and adds maps, pie charts and inverse proportions.
