Each column in the directory counts something NCERT actually printed, and each count can be checked against the PDF.
A section is one of NCERT’s numbered headings. This activity-led book prints none, so that column is empty.
A question is an end-of-chapter exercise. Every chapter closes with activities instead, so the question column stays at zero throughout.
A figure is a numbered figure printed with a caption. The illustrations here sit inside the activities without separate numbering, so that column does not measure how visual the book is.
The activities column carries the real work — 68 activities and no end-of-chapter question blocks anywhere in the book.
None of the chapters ends with a printed summary, so the notes below describe what each chapter’s own topic headings actually cover.
Chapter 1: Water—The Essence of Life (pp. 1-20)
Water is introduced through the forms it takes in everyday life. The chapter names the sources we draw water from, the different forms it appears in, and the changes we can observe; from those observations it builds the water cycle, then surface water, and ends by calling water our lifeline.
- Sources of Water
- Water has Different Forms
- Observing Changes
- Water Cycle
- Surface Water
- Our Lifeline—
With 10 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, this is the most activity-heavy chapter in the book.
Chapter 2: Journey of a River (pp. 21-37)
The river itself tells this chapter — the life it holds and the many ways it supports lives. Then the focus turns to dams that store water and change its flow, and to what dissolves in water.
It ends with the problem of floods and the practical family response: safety tips, what to do during a flood, and a ready disaster emergency kit.
- The Life I Hold
- The Many Ways I Support Lives
- Dams—Storing My Water, Changing My Flow
- Dissolve in water
- Match the Columns
- Flood problem
- Flood Safety Tips
- During the Flood
- Have a Disaster Emergency Kit Ready
With 7 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, this is where the book’s practical flood-safety material lives — useful for a family emergency plan, not just for school.
Chapter 3: The Mystery of Food (pp. 38-54)
The unit Health and Well-being opens with an everyday mystery: a forgotten tiffin box. Students work through what happens to food as it spoils, record two findings from observing it, then meet food preservation and finish with drying and dehydration as the simplest preserving method.
- Food Spoilage
- The Forgotten Tiffin Box!
- Finding #1
- Finding #2
- Food Preservation
- Let us observe
- Drying and Dehydration
With 5 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, it is a lighter chapter whose core idea sits in the tiffin-box observation rather than in definitions.
Chapter 4: Our School—A Happy Place (pp. 55-72)
The school becomes a place students map, explore and help run. After a Green School start and a school-explorer activity, students take on five roles — electricity savers, green guardians, water watchers, traffic trackers and waste warriors — and the chapter closes with waste management and a find-out task.
- Green School
- Be a School Explorer!
- Electricity Savers
- Green Guardians
- Water Watchers
- Traffic Trackers
- Waste Warriors
- Waste Management
- Find out
With 7 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, the real data-gathering happens in the student’s own school building, not on the page.
Chapter 5: Our Vibrant Country (pp. 73-93)
The unit Incredible India begins with a special day in school — the Republic Day celebration at Delhi. From there the chapter finds India in currency notes, reads the symbols that speak, and closes by looking at diversity everywhere around the student.
- A Special Day in School
- Republic Day Celebration at Delhi
- Finding India in Currency Notes
- Symbols that Speak
- Find out
- Diversity Everywhere
With 8 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, much of the work is close looking — at notes, at symbols, and at the diversity around the student.
Chapter 6: Some Unique Places (pp. 94-111)
This chapter takes students to places a school trip cannot: the islands of India, the Sundarbans and its mangroves, the green hills and great traditions of Northeast India, and the Western Ghats. Safety measures appear early, and a closing reflection — let us reflect — ties the places together.
- Islands of India
- Safety Measures
- Sundarbans: Home of the Mangroves
- Northeast India: Green Hills and Great Traditions
- Western Ghats
- Let us reflect
With 7 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, it is map-based and reflective rather than exercise-driven.
Chapter 7: Energy—How Things Work (pp. 112-130)
The unit Things Around Us introduces energy through things students can build. Three making activities come first — a balloon air rocket, a rubber band guitar and a sun-powered water warmer — and from them the chapter moves to sources of energy, energy from fuel, and understanding how fuel works.
- Extension Activity: Balloon Air Rocket
- Rubber Band Guitar
- Sun-powered Water Warmer
- Sources of Energy
- Energy from Fuel
- Understanding How Fuel Works
With 9 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, it is the book’s most experimental chapter — the activities are the lesson.
Chapter 8: Clothes—How Things are Made (pp. 131-144)
Cloth is traced from patterns with threads through to finished clothes. The chapter covers India’s traditions of weaving, separates natural fibres from synthetic fibres, then moves to crafting with needle and thread, stitching clothes together, and the traditional embroideries of India and their origin.
- Patterns with Threads
- Traditions of Weaving
- Natural fibres
- Synthetic fibres
- Crafting with Needle and Thread
- Stitching Clothes Together
- Stitch and Decorate
- Traditional Embroideries of India and Their Origin
With 8 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, it is a workshop-style chapter where doing matters as much as reading.
Chapter 9: Rhythms of Nature (pp. 145-160)
The final unit opens with change. A demonstration of day and night explains the changes around us in a day, and the longer rhythm of seasons is tracked through a seasons journal and a classroom seasons chart.
- Changes Around Us in a Day
- Demonstration—Day and Night
- Changes Around Us in a Year (Seasons)
- Seasons’ Journal
- Classroom Activity—Seasons’ Chart
With only 2 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, it is the book’s lightest activity chapter — its real task, the seasons journal, runs across a whole year.
Chapter 10: Earth—Our Shared Home (24 pages)
The book closes on Earth as the blue planet, our shared home. The student first places themself — writing their address and finding it on a globe — and then meets six stories that connect India to the world: travelling birds, yoga as India’s gift, chilli, sugar, the Mexican marigold, and cows that went to Brazil.
- The Blue Planet
- 1. My address
- 2. Use a globe and find out:
- Six stories that connect India to the world:
- Story 1: The Travelling Birds!
- Story 2: Yoga—India’s Gift to the World!
- Story 3: Chilli—A Spice that Changed our Lives!
- Story 4: The Sweet Story of Sugar!
- Story 5: The Mexican Marigold Moves into India!
- Story 6: The Cows that Went to Brazil!
With 5 activities and no end-of-chapter question block, it ends the book by looking outward from India to the world.
The five units that shape this book
The ten chapters pair into five units, each opened by a unit page and an “About the Unit” note. The activity totals below add each unit’s two chapters together.
| Unit | Chapters | Focus | Activities |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life Around Us | 1-2 | Water in everyday life — sources, forms, the water cycle, and a river’s journey | 17 |
| Health and Well-being | 3-4 | Food, spoilage and preservation; the school as a place students care for | 12 |
| Incredible India | 5-6 | Unity and diversity across the country; unique places from the islands to the Western Ghats | 15 |
| Things Around Us | 7-8 | Energy through experiments and fuels; how cloth is made from fibres | 17 |
| Our Amazing Planet | 9-10 | Rhythms of day, night and seasons; Earth as our shared home | 7 |
The five unit totals add to the 68 activities counted across the book. Units 1 and 4 (Life Around Us and Things Around Us) each carry 17 activities — the hands-on core of the course — while the final unit carries only 7 because Chapter 9 is built around the year-long seasons journal rather than quick activities.
Chapter lengths vary from 14 to 24 pages. The longest chapters are Earth—Our Shared Home at 24 pages and Our Vibrant Country at 21 pages; the shortest is Clothes—How Things are Made at 14 pages.

How to use the Class 5 EVS book PDF for study
This activity-led book rewards doing over rereading. Here is an order of work that matches how the book is built.
- Read in the book’s own unit order. The water unit (Chapters 1-2) comes before the places unit (Chapters 5-6) on purpose: a river’s journey builds on knowing where water comes from.
- Redo the activities instead of rereading. The book sets no end-of-chapter question sets; Chapter 1 alone carries 10 activities, and they are the actual lesson.
- Try the Chapter 7 experiments at home. The balloon air rocket, the rubber band guitar and the sun-powered water warmer need only household materials.
- Treat Chapter 9’s seasons journal as a year-long task, not one sitting. The chapter has only 2 activities because its real work is daily observation across the year.
- Carry only the chapter you need. Each chapter is a separate official PDF (eeev101.pdf to eeev110.pdf), so a phone or printout holds one chapter, not all 184 pages.
- Check the current syllabus. Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — see the current official syllabus on the CBSE website before deciding what carries exam weight.
