Chapter 1: Geography as a Discipline (pp. 1-11)

Geography studies the Earth’s surface and how people and environments interact. This opening chapter frames that study from two directions: the systematic approach (physical geography, human geography, biogeography) and the regional approach (area studies, regional planning, regional development, regional analysis). Together they make geography an integrating discipline, linking the natural and social sciences (NCERT, p. 5).

Chapter 3: Interior of the Earth (pp. 18-26)

This is the chapter to open for anything about the inside of the Earth, and for earthquakes. It sets out the direct and indirect sources of information about the interior, then uses earthquake waves as the key indirect evidence — how they propagate, and why a shadow zone emerges where the waves are not recorded (NCERT, p. 21).

It then covers the types of earthquakes, how they are measured, their effects and how often they occur.

Chapter 4: Distribution of Oceans and Continents (pp. 27-35)

Continents and oceans are not fixed features — that is the argument of this chapter. It begins with Wegener’s continental drift and the evidence behind it: the jig-saw fit of continents, rocks of the same age across oceans, placer deposits and the distribution of fossils.

It then takes up the force that drives drift, post-drift studies, and the convectional current theory behind sea-floor spreading (NCERT, p. 31).

Chapter 5: Geomorphic Processes (pp. 36-46)

This chapter is about the forces that shape the land. Endogenic processes work from inside the Earth, while exogenic processes wear the surface down from outside. The chapter then moves to weathering — chemical, physical and biological — its special effects and significance, and closes with mass movements.

This chapter carries the book’s only hands-on Activity, plus 5 figures — denudational processes (p. 39), weathering regimes (p. 40), exfoliation (p. 41), slumping (p. 42) and landslide scars (p. 42) — and 3 questions. Read it before Chapter 6 and half of the next chapter’s landforms will look familiar.

Chapter 6: Landforms and Their Evolution (pp. 47-62)

Running water is the main landform-maker in this chapter: its erosional forms — potholes and plunge pools, incised meanders, river terraces — and its depositional forms such as alluvial fans, floodplains, natural levees and point bars (NCERT, p. 50).

The second half moves to karst scenery in limestone: pools, sinkholes, lapies and pavements, then stalactites, stalagmites and pillars. Later figures extend the same story to glaciers, coastal spits and sand dunes.

At 16 pages, 14 figures and 25 questions, this is the longest and most diagram-heavy chapter in the book, tied with Chapter 9 for the heaviest exercise load. Several figures show Indian examples — the Kaveri gorge (p. 49), the Amarnath alluvial fan (p. 50), the Krishna delta (p. 50), the Burhi Gandak meanders (p. 51) and the Godavari spit (p. 59).

Chapter 7: Composition and Structure of Atmosphere

This short chapter sets up the climate block. It covers the composition of the atmosphere — including water vapour and dust particles and the roles they play — then the layered structure of the atmosphere, and finally the elements of weather and climate that the later chapters build on.

The index records this as a 4-page chapter with 1 figure (Structure of Atmosphere) but 14 questions — the shortest chapter in the book that still pulls more questions than several longer ones.

Chapter 8: Solar Radiation, Heat Balance and Temperature (pp. 67-75)

This is where the Earth’s heat is accounted for. The chapter opens with insolation and how solar radiation passes through the atmosphere, then its spatial distribution at the surface.

It moves to terrestrial radiation and the heat budget of the planet (NCERT, p. 69), then the factors controlling temperature distribution and the resulting distribution of temperature. The chapter ends with a printed Project Work heading — one of only two in the book.

Chapter 9: Atmospheric Circulation and Weather Systems (pp. 76-85)

This is the mechanics chapter of the climate block. It explains why air moves, starting from atmospheric pressure and its vertical and horizontal variation, and the world distribution of sea-level pressure. The core is the three forces on the wind — pressure gradient force, frictional force and the Coriolis force — and how they combine in pressure and wind systems.

Chapter 10: Water in the Atmosphere (pp. 86-90)

This is a text-led chapter about water moving through the air. It covers evaporation and condensation, fog and mist, then the three rainfall types — convectional, orographic and cyclonic rain — and the world distribution of rainfall. Like Chapter 8, it ends with a Project Work heading.

Chapter 11: World Climate and Climate Change (pp. 91-98)

This chapter classifies the world’s climates using Koeppen’s scheme — the tropical humid group (tropical wet Af, tropical monsoon Am, tropical wet-and-dry Aw), the dry group (subtropical steppe BSh, subtropical desert BWh) and the warm temperate group (humid subtropical Cwa, Mediterranean climate Cs). The chapter title pairs world climate with climate change.

This chapter treats the oceans as a feature of the Earth. It opens with the hydrological cycle that keeps water moving between ocean, atmosphere and land (NCERT, p. 100).

It then maps the real shape of the ocean floor — continental shelf, continental slope, deep sea plain, oceanic deeps or trenches — plus minor relief features, mid-oceanic ridges and submarine canyons. Later figures add the thermocline, surface temperature and surface salinity.

This chapter separates the three kinds of ocean movement. Waves and their characteristics come first; then tides, including the famous tides of the Bay of Fundy in Canada, the types of tides by cause and by frequency, and why tides matter (NCERT, p. 109). Finally ocean currents — their characteristics, types, the major currents and their effects (NCERT, p. 112).

Chapter 14: Life on the Earth (pp. 114-120)

The closing chapter treats life as part of the Earth’s physical system. It opens under the heading Biodiversity and Conservation and distinguishes the three kinds of biodiversity — genetic, species and ecosystem diversity — then the ecological, economic and scientific importance of biodiversity, its loss, and endangered species.

How to use the Class 11 NCERT Geography book PDF

There is a sensible order to read this book in — each block builds on the one before it.

  • Read Chapters 2 and 3 before Chapter 4. The planet’s origin and its interior come before the story of how continents moved.
  • Read Chapter 5 before Chapter 6. The geomorphic processes explain the landforms that the next chapter catalogues — weathering and mass movements feed directly into river and karst landforms.
  • Work the atmosphere block in order: 7 (composition and structure) → 8 (solar radiation and heat balance) → 9 (circulation and weather systems) → 10 (water in the atmosphere) → 11 (climate zones). Chapter 9 is where the mechanics lives, and it is the hardest of the five.
  • Use Chapters 2, 6 and 9 for practice. They carry 21, 25 and 25 questions respectively — the book’s heaviest exercise loads.
  • Revise diagrams by covering the labels. Chapters 3, 6, 8, 9 and 12 are the figure-heavy ones; name each feature aloud before checking.
  • Finish with the oceans and life. Chapter 12 (Water (Oceans)) and Chapter 13 (Movements of Ocean Water) work as a pair, and Chapter 14 (Life on the Earth) closes the book.
  • Two chapters end with printed Project Work — 8 and 10 — often assigned as term work rather than examined.
  • Weather questions usually point at Chapter 11 — but the pressure systems, wind forces and cyclones you need are in Chapter 9.
