Chapter 1: India – Location (pp. 1-6)

This opening chapter locates India before any physical geography begins. It introduces India’s administrative divisions through Fig 1.1 (p. 3), shows India’s location in the eastern world through Fig 1.2 (p. 4), and names the country’s neighbours.

Chapter 2: Physiography (pp. 7-16)

This chapter organises India’s rivers into two systems. It defines the main drainage patterns, then separates the Himalayan drainage — the Indus, Ganga and Brahmaputra systems and their evolution — from the Peninsular drainage and its own evolution.

Chapter 4: Climate and Vegetation (pp. 27-41)

This chapter teaches the Indian monsoon as one connected system. It starts with unity and diversity in the monsoon climate and the factors determining the climate of India, then moves through the ITCZ (Inter Tropical Convergence Zone), the nature of the monsoon, its onset and break, the rhythm of seasons, and the role of El-Nino.

The chapter teaches through four monsoon and rainfall maps: onset (Fig 4.1, p. 30), normal onset dates (Fig 4.2, p. 32), seasonal rainfall (Fig 4.3, p. 36) and annual rainfall (Fig 4.4, p. 39). Revision should begin with these maps rather than the prose definitions.

Chapter 5: Natural Vegetation (pp. 42-51)

Chapter 5 maps India’s natural vegetation by forest type. It runs from tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests through tropical deciduous and tropical thorn forests to montane and littoral and swamp forests, then moves to forest conservation, social forestry and farm forestry.

This is the densest figure set in the book — 8 figures across 10 pages, from the evergreen forest photograph (Fig 5.1, p. 42) to the biosphere reserves map (Fig 5.8, p. 49). Matching each forest type to its figure is faster than rereading the descriptions.

This book is short but ordered: each chapter assumes the one before it. A workable study order is Chapter 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, because drainage, climate and vegetation all assume the physical divisions established in Chapter 2.

1. Chapter 1 (India – Location) then Chapter 2 (Physiography): fix where India is, then what its land is made of.
2. Chapter 3 (Drainage System): river systems follow physiographic divisions, so this needs Chapter 2 first.
3. Chapter 4 (Climate and Vegetation): the monsoon makes sense once you can place the Himalayas, the plateau and the plains.
4. Chapter 5 (Natural Vegetation): vegetation responds to climate, so it reads naturally after Chapter 4.
5. Chapter 6 (Natural Hazards and Disasters) last: it applies physiography, drainage and climate to real hazards.
