Chapter 1: Introduction to Maps (pp. 1–16)

Introduction to Maps lays down the essentials of map making — what distinguishes a map from a sketch, and the role of scale and directions — then traces the history of map making from Ptolemy’s world map to the ancient Indian conception of the seven dwipas, and closes with the uses of maps through a series of thematic Nagpur district maps (Figs. 1.7–1.13, one theme per map).

Chapter 2: Map Scale (pp. 17–25)

How to study with the Class 11 NCERT Geography book PDF

  1. Introduction to Maps — the vocabulary. Map versus sketch, scale and directions are the terms every later chapter assumes.
  2. Map Scale — the measurement skill. Master the statement, R.F. and bar-scale conversions before moving on; this is where arithmetic slips cost marks.
  3. Latitude, Longitude and Time — the grid and the clock. Once longitude is understood as time, the International Date Line follows.
  4. Map Projections — the drawing chapter. The constructions need practice time, not just reading.
  5. Topographical Maps — contour interpretation. Read the reference sheets, then practise identifying slopes and landforms.

  • Longitude treated as distance — the length of a degree of longitude shrinks away from the Equator, so distance across the grid is measured along latitude. Chapter 3 fixes the longitude–time relation.
  • Contour spacing read backwards — closely spaced contours mean a steep slope, widely spaced contours a gentle one. Chapter 5.
  • Confused elements of visual interpretation — tone, size, shape, texture and pattern are separate clues, and mixing them up misreads the image. Chapter 6.
