The NCERT class 11 geography book is not a single volume — NCERT prints the subject as three separate textbooks: Fundamentals of Physical Geography, India: Physical Environment and Practical Work in Geography. All three are official and free, and each one is linked below with its own page and PDFs.
The split matters because each book restarts chapter numbering at Chapter 1, so a chapter number alone does not tell you which book to open. ‘Chapter 3’ exists in all three books. This guide is maintained for the 2026-27 session and indexes the current official NCERT editions.

Which Class 11 Geography book do you need?
Start with the rule that saves the most confusion: every book begins at Chapter 1, so a chapter number alone cannot identify the book. Always name the book and the chapter together — ‘Interior of the Earth, Chapter 3’ — before you open anything.
Match your topic to a book instead:
- World physical geography — the Earth’s interior, landforms, atmosphere, oceans, climate and life on Earth — is Fundamentals of Physical Geography, Chapters 1–14.
- The geography of India — location, physiography, drainage, climate and vegetation, natural hazards — is India: Physical Environment, Chapters 1–6.
- Maps and map skills — scale, latitude, longitude and time, projections, topographical maps, remote sensing — is Practical Work in Geography, Chapters 1–6.
Teachers usually call the three books ‘Physical Geography’, ‘India’ and ‘Practical’. So ‘the India book’ means India: Physical Environment, not the whole subject.
The table below routes a few common homework topics. The page ranges are the printed NCERT page spans.
| Homework topic | Book | Chapter | Pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interior of the Earth | Fundamentals of Physical Geography | 3 | 18–26 |
| Drainage System | India: Physical Environment | 3 | 17–26 |
| Topographical Maps | Practical Work in Geography | 5 | 49–68 |
| Water (oceans) | Fundamentals of Physical Geography | 12 | 99–107 |
One trap: the word climate titles chapters in two different books — Chapter 7 of Fundamentals of Physical Geography and Chapter 4 of India: Physical Environment, ‘Climate and Vegetation’ (NCERT, pp. 27–41). Matching by topic name alone can mislead, so confirm with the chapter list or the PDF code.
| Mistake | Correct rule | How to check |
|---|---|---|
| Searching for ‘Chapter 3’ with no book name | Chapter 3 exists in all three books | Pair the chapter number with the book name first |
| Matching ‘climate’ to a single book | Climate is Chapter 7 of Fundamentals and Chapter 4 of India | Check the PDF code: kegy2… is Fundamentals, kegy1… is India |
| Downloading any kegy file and assuming it is the whole subject | kegy1, kegy2 and kegy3 are three separate books | Read the second digit: 1 = India, 2 = Fundamentals, 3 = Practical |
How to use the Class 11 NCERT Geography book PDFs
Every chapter PDF on ncert.nic.in follows one filename pattern: kegy + book digit + chapter number. The digit tells you which of the three books the file belongs to.
| PDF code prefix | Book | What the book covers |
|---|---|---|
| kegy1… | India: Physical Environment | Geography of India — location, physiography, drainage, climate, vegetation, hazards |
| kegy2… | Fundamentals of Physical Geography | World physical geography — Earth’s interior, landforms, atmosphere, oceans, life |
| kegy3… | Practical Work in Geography | Maps and map skills — scale, coordinates, projections, topographical sheets, remote sensing |
So the first chapter of each book is easy to recognise. The three links below are the official chapter PDFs straight from NCERT’s server:
- kegy201.pdf is Chapter 1 of Fundamentals of Physical Geography, ‘Geography as a Discipline’ — open it to confirm the kegy2 code and the chapter title before you download the rest of the book.
- kegy101.pdf is Chapter 1 of India: Physical Environment, ‘India – Location’ — open it when your homework is about India’s position, extent or administrative divisions (NCERT, pp. 1–6).
- kegy301.pdf is Chapter 1 of Practical Work in Geography, ‘Introduction to Maps’ — open it to see how much of this book is about reading and drawing maps rather than reading text (NCERT, pp. 1–16).
All three books are official and free on ncert.nic.in, with no login required. Checking the code before you open a file tells you instantly which book you hold — no guessing. You can also reach every book from the Class 11 NCERT books hub.
What each book covers and who it is for
Fundamentals of Physical Geography teaches physical geography at the world scale — the processes that shape the Earth, from its interior and landforms to the atmosphere, oceans and life on it. It is the longest book of the three and carries 130 of the set’s 170 exercise questions, so it is where most homework comes from.
India: Physical Environment covers the physical geography of India itself — location, relief, drainage, climate, vegetation and natural hazards. It is the shortest book of the three and carries the fewest exercise questions, just 18 of the set’s 170, so it is quick to revise.
Practical Work in Geography teaches map reading and construction — scale, latitude and longitude, projections, topographical sheets and satellite imagery. It is the most visual book of the set: its Remote Sensing chapter alone holds 34 of the 127 verified numbered figures indexed from the textbooks (NCERT, pp. 69–92).
One line to finish on: if a homework question cites a figure number, the book that prints that figure is the one you need.
