The NCERT Class 1 maths book PDF is the Joyful Mathematics textbook — 13 chapters across 130 printed pages — and every official chapter file is on this page. The links below go straight to NCERT’s own PDFs on ncert.nic.in, so what you download is the real book, not a scan from a third-party site.
The PDF alone does not tell you what is inside before you open it. This page adds the chapter-by-chapter picture, measured from the book itself: which chapters carry the most hands-on activities, where counting becomes addition, and the order of work that suits a six-year-old learning at home.

Inside the CBSE Class 1 maths book PDF
Quick facts about the volume, read from the official chapter files:
- 13 chapters across 130 printed pages.
- 0 named syllabus sections — the book organises itself by activity titles such as “Let us Do” and “Project Work”.
- 26 hands-on activities spread across the chapters.
- 0 end-of-chapter exercise questions — practice happens inside the activities, not in a question bank.
Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official curriculum for what is examined.
What each chapter teaches, measured from the book
The directory below is built from the official PDFs. Each row shows one chapter with its page span and the activity count read out of the file.
| Ch. | Chapter | Sections | Activities | Figures | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Finding the Furry Cat! | — | 3 | — | — |

Two of the directory’s columns need explaining for this particular book:
- A section is one of NCERT’s own numbered headings. This book prints none — it organises itself by activity titles such as “Let us Play” and “Project Work”, so every chapter shows 0.
- A question is an end-of-chapter exercise. There are none anywhere in the book — chapters close with activities and Project Work, and that is where the practice lives.
This book prints its diagrams without numbered captions, so there is no figure index on this page — the art is in the PDF, but it cannot be cited by number.
The mathematics skills this book builds
Use this table when you want one specific skill — it maps each skill area to the chapter that teaches it.
| Skill area | Taught in | What children actually do |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-number readiness: matching and sorting | Chapter 1: Finding the Furry Cat! | Find hidden things, sort and match, join a train game |
| Measurement language: long and short | Chapter 2: What is Long? | Compare lengths, play a slide game, use long/short words |
| Counting and number recognition to 20 | Chapters 3 and 4 | Match fingers to dots, count and colour, join numbers in order, make Number Pairs of 10 |
| Addition | Chapters 5 and 6 | Add and draw, count fingers, play dice games, hop and find the sum |
| Subtraction | Chapter 6 | Add, subtract and match, solve problem stories |
| Numbers 51–99 | Chapter 8 | Count and write numbers, fill in missing numbers |
| Patterns | Chapter 9 | Extend patterns by drawing further |
| Daily time routines | Chapter 10 | Order the events of their own day |
| Repeated addition | Chapter 11 | Count groups on an amusement-park visit and a bus ride |
| Money and saving | Chapter 12 | Match the same amounts, discuss why saving is a good habit |
| Sorting and true/false statements | Chapter 13 | Sort toys and flowers, mark statements true or false |
Chapter 1: Finding the Furry Cat!
Before any numerals appear, this hide-and-seek chapter builds pre-number matching, sorting and counting through the train game “Chhuk Chhuk goes our Train!” and a find-the-things play, and with 3 of the book’s 26 activities it is the readiness work of the first week.
Chapter 2: What is Long?
A wise-grandmother story and a slide game teach the words long and short, and its single activity across 8 pages is the gentle bridge from sorting things into measuring them.
Chapter 3: Mango Treat
Fingers, dots, count-and-match and join-the-numbers pages make counting and number recognition concrete, and with 1 activity across 15 pages it is the book’s first real number work — a long chapter for the age group.
Chapter 4: Making 10
Dotty Bug’s designs and vanishing buttons turn number pairs of 10 and counting up to 20 into games, and its 2 activities across 15 pages make “5 and 5 make 10” something a child plays with cards, not a worksheet.
Chapter 5: How Many?
The longest chapter at 16 pages teaches addition as counting altogether with add-and-draw, finger counting and a dice game, and its 4 activities tie with Chapter 7 for the book’s heaviest hands-on load.
Chapter 6: Vegetable Farm
Hop-and-find sums and problem stories set on a vegetable farm bring addition and subtraction together, and with 3 activities across 8 pages it is the first chapter where children subtract as well as add.
Chapter 7: Lina’s Family
Inside a family get-together story, counting and comparing quantities grow out of talk prompts and an amazing-facts page, and 4 activities across 12 pages make it one of the two most activity-rich chapters in the book.
Chapter 8: Fun with Numbers
Count-and-write and missing-number practice plus a picture talk push the range to numbers 51 to 99, and its 2 activities across 14 pages carry the book’s number-writing stretch.
Chapter 9: Utsav
Through a festival (Utsav) setting, children extend drawn patterns by continuing each one, and with 1 activity across 7 pages it is short enough for one sitting.
Chapter 10: How do I Spend my Day?
Ordering the events of a child’s own day builds daily time routines through talk-and-do activities, and 3 activities across 6 pages make it an easy at-home revision session.
Chapter 11: How Many Times?
Counting groups on an amusement-park visit and a bus ride introduces repeated addition, and at 4 pages with no activities it is the shortest chapter — the first quiet step toward multiplication.
Chapter 12: How Much Can We Spend?
Through Rahim Kaka the toy seller, children match the same amounts and discuss why saving money is a good habit, and 2 activities across 5 pages make it the book’s only money chapter — easy to practise with real coins at home.
Chapter 13: So Many Toys
Colourful flowers and toys turn sorting, counting and true or false statements into a game-like check of the year’s work, and with no activities across 11 pages it is a calm closing chapter.

How to use the CBSE Class 1 maths book
A six-year-old cannot be rushed through this book the way an older child revises. The order below follows how the skills build.
- Start with Chapter 1, then Chapter 2 — matching, sorting and long/short language come before any numerals.
- Chapter 3, then Chapter 4 — counting and Number Pairs of 10 come before any addition.
- Chapter 5 for addition, then Chapter 6 for addition and subtraction together.
- Chapter 8 once counting to 20 is fluent — it carries numbers 51 to 99.
- Leave Chapter 11 (repeated addition) and Chapter 12 (money) until counting is confident.
- Weave the short chapters — 9 (patterns) and 10 (daily time) — into ordinary days; they run only 7 and 6 pages.
The rule that makes this book different: the activities are the lesson. Skipping a “Let us Do” or “Project Work” skips the practice, because there is no question bank at the end of a chapter to catch up with.
Try one tiny home version of Chapter 4: hold up 3 fingers and ask the child which fingers make the 10-pair. The answer is 7 — Number Pairs of 10, practised with fresh numbers instead of the book’s own examples.
Choosing a Class 1 to 5 math book PDF: what to check
If you are hunting primary maths PDFs generally, three checks separate the official file from a copy:
- Edition — for Class 1, the current NCERT mathematics series is Joyful Mathematics, the book this page indexes.
- Medium — this page covers the English edition; regional-medium editions are separate files.
- Hosting — an official PDF lives on ncert.nic.in, never on a third-party file host.
This page lists Class 1 only, so for other classes use NCERT’s own class hubs. Our Class 1 books hub lists the other subjects in this class.
