What the Class 4 Science book PDF covers at a glance

Here is the shape of the book in numbers, straight from the NCERT edition:

  • 10 chapters
  • 164 printed pages
  • 10 official PDFs on ncert.nic.in, one per chapter
  • 48 activities across the book
  • 0 numbered section headings
  • 0 end-of-chapter question sets

The first two numbers frame the course: this is a single, activity-heavy volume rather than a set of separate science and social science textbooks. The last two are the ones students notice — no chapter ends with a numbered exercise list, so the 48 activities are the work of the book.

Because this page sits for Class 4, one honest note: at the primary stage CBSE students take Environmental Studies rather than separate science subjects, so this book is the class 4 science book for that stage. The science-like topics — floating and sinking, recycled paper, the environment, the sky — sit in Chapters 7 to 10.

Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, so check the current official syllabus when planning what to revise.

What is inside each chapter

The directory below lists every chapter of the book with the counts that matter to a student deciding what to read tonight.

Ch. Chapter Sections Activities Figures Questions
1 Our Community — 3 — —
2 Exploring Our Neighbourhood — 5 — —
3 Chapter 4: — 7 — —
4 Growing up with Nature — 7 — —
5 Health and Well-being — 3 — —
6 Happy and Healthy Living — 8 — —
7 Things Around Us — 5 — —
8 How Things are Made — 5 — —
9 Our Environment — 4 — —
10 Our Sky — 1 — —

Three count columns matter here. An activity is one of NCERT’s hands-on tasks printed inside the chapter, and the book carries 48 of them. A section is a numbered heading, of which the book has none, and a question is an end-of-chapter exercise set, of which the book also has none.

Instead of numbered headings, the chapters pace themselves with in-text markers — Find out, Let us reflect, Enquire, Figure it out and Teacher to Facilitate appear inside the pages and do the job a section number does in higher classes.

If you arrived with a topic in mind, this short map sends you to the right chapter directly:

Topic you came for Chapter that teaches it
Floating and sinking Chapter 7: Things Around Us
Recycled paper and the 5Rs Chapter 8: How Things are Made
Food groups Chapter 5: Health and Well-being
Forest and herbal garden Chapter 4: Growing up with Nature
Farm, desert and seashore Chapter 9: Our Environment
Shadows and the night sky Chapter 10: Our Sky

The activity load is uneven on purpose. Chapter 6, Happy and Healthy Living, carries 8 activities, the heaviest in the book, while Chapter 10, Our Sky, closes with just 1.

Chapter lengths run from 11 pages in How Things are Made to 24 pages in both Nature Trail and Our Environment. The two longest chapters are also the two most observation-heavy, so plan them as multi-day work.

Chapter 1: Our Community (16 pages)

Chapter 1 opens with how a village runs as a community — people living together, a community bridge across a river, helping hands, and Van Mahotsav, the festival when everyone plants trees — a good starting chapter because it begins from a child’s own surroundings.

Chapter 2: Exploring Our Neighbourhood (16 pages)

Chapter 2 turns the lesson outward to the neighbourhood students walk through daily — the route back home, interviews with elders, and how families plan savings for the future — useful for students who want to observe and question the people around them.

Chapter 3: Nature Trail (24 pages)

Chapter 3 sets off on a nature trail with safety rules for the outdoors, asking students to record what they see — from animals in the forest to their own bird diary — the chapter for students who love exploring outside.

Chapter 4: Growing up with Nature (12 pages)

Chapter 4 follows a journey through a forest into a village, links nature with everyday life, and ends with students designing their own herbal garden — ideal for project work on plants and forest life.

Chapter 5: Health and Well-being (16 pages)

Chapter 5 deals with food for health — the food groups, what counts as a super food, and why the book says no to junk food — the chapter for anyone curious about what makes food healthy.

Chapter 6: Happy and Healthy Living (17 pages)

Chapter 6 traces the journey of the grains to the plate and builds healthy daily habits — mindful eating, valuing food, enjoying sports, sleeping well, and feeling safe — useful for building routines around food, sleep and safety.

Chapter 7: Things Around Us (15 pages)

Chapter 7 makes students experiment with things around us — which objects float and which sink, and how to test and compare their own boats — for students who keep asking why some things float and others sink.

Chapter 8: How Things are Made (11 pages)

Chapter 8 shows how everyday objects are made, from making recycled paper and natural colours to the 5Rs that guide responsible choices — for students who want to know how things are made and why reuse matters.

Chapter 9: Our Environment (24 pages)

Chapter 9 compares different lands, different lives — farms with Gurpreet, the desert and Jaisalmer Fort with Ritika, and the seashore with Chandni — for students who wonder how life differs across landscapes.

Chapter 10: Our Sky (13 pages)

Chapter 10 studies the sky — day and night, how the Sun makes shadows, playing with shadow shapes, and reading the night sky — for students who look up and ask why day turns to night.

Read in order, the ten chapters trace one clear path: community and neighbourhood first, nature and health next, then materials, environment and sky.

How to use the Class 4 Science book for CBSE

This is an activity-led book, so the order of work differs from a textbook with end-of-chapter questions. A sequence that fits how the chapters are written:

  1. Start with Chapters 1 and 2. They begin from the child’s own street, family and neighbourhood, so they need no background knowledge.
  2. Do each chapter’s activities while reading, not after. There are no question sets waiting at the end of a chapter; the activities are the teaching.
  3. Treat Chapters 3 and 4 as multi-day projects. A bird diary and a herbal garden cannot be finished in one sitting, and the 7 activities in each chapter assume repeated visits outdoors.
  4. For anything searched as class 4 science, go straight to Chapters 7 to 10. Floating and sinking, recycled paper, the environment and the sky all live there.
  5. Check the current official syllabus. Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical, and the examinable set can differ from the printed chapter list.

The mistake to avoid: skipping the activities to “reach the questions”. There are no questions to reach — the activities are the questions, and a student who completes all 48 has done the real work of the book.

This listing is maintained for the 2026-27 academic session using the NCERT textbook information available to us. NCERT remains the authority for confirming the latest edition.

The NCERT books directory is the starting point for every class and subject on this site; it carries the same chapter and PDF data you see here.

The Class 4 hub collects this Environmental Studies book alongside the other Class 4 textbooks, so you can move from EVS to the next subject without leaving the site.

Class 4 takes a single Environmental Studies volume rather than separate science and social science titles, so the hub is where the neighbouring subjects live.
