The Class 12 Home Science Book Human Ecology and Family Sciences is the official NCERT textbook for Class 12 Home Science, published in two parts — this page covers Part II, chapters 8 to 14, with every official chapter PDF linked in the table below.
The PDFs alone don’t show which chapters carry diagrams, which carry practicals and which are pure reading. This page adds what each of the seven chapters actually teaches — topics, figures, activities and end-of-chapter questions — with page references you can check against the official files, and a suggested order to study in.

The directory counts four things per chapter: sections, figures, activities and questions.
A “section” is one of NCERT’s own numbered section headings. Part II uses unnumbered topic headings, so that column reads 0 for every chapter — the topic lists below are those headings, in the book’s own order.
A “figure” is a numbered figure indexed from the book, an “activity” is a printed activity or practical, and a “question” is an end-of-chapter exercise question.
Chapter 8: Fabric and Apparel (pp. 153-175)
This chapter applies the visual arts to cloth: elements of design, colour and the principles of design as they are used in fabric and apparel. It is the chapter for a student taking the design-and-apparel strand of Home Science.
Chapter 8 opens with the recurring block this book uses — a note for the teachers, learning objectives, basic concepts, Activity 1 and key terms — which is scaffolding rather than content to revise separately. The chapter’s own topics run in this order:
- Design For Fabric And Apparel — the frame for the whole chapter.
- Elements Of Design — the design elements used in fabric and apparel.
- Understanding Colour — colour theory, with the wheel and shade figures.
- Principles Of Design — how the elements are composed into a design.
- Preparing For A Career — the career section, inside the chapter rather than at the back of the book.
Chapter 8 is the visual heart of the book, with 12 of its 27 indexed figures packed into 23 pages, most of them on colour and design: the colour wheel (p. 160), grey scale and colour shades and tints (p. 161), and the Pantone cards (p. 162).
The fabric-technique figures — composition (p. 169), knotting (p. 171), making a ball, coiling and binding (p. 172), and “Folding*” (p. 173) — sit in the design section. The chapter carries 5 exercise questions and 2 activities.
Chapter 9: Fashion Design and Merchandising (pp. 176-189)
This chapter builds the working vocabulary of the fashion industry: fashion terminology, the fashion cycle, fashion evolution, and fashion merchandising — how fashion is carried into retail. It is for students headed to the fashion-industry strand of the subject.
The chapter’s topics, in the book’s own order:
- Basic Concepts — the opening definitions the chapter builds on.
- Fashion Terminology — the industry’s working terms.
- Fashion Development — how a fashion comes to be.
- France — The Centre Of Fashion
- Fashion Evolution — how fashions change over time.
- Fashion Merchandising
- Merchandising Rights
- Fashion Retail Organisations — Overview of retailing
- Major Divisions — how fashion retail is split into divisions.
The chapter’s single figure, “Stages of fashion cycle” (p. 179), anchors a terminology-heavy chapter whose 7 questions in 14 pages make it the densest question load in the book relative to its length. Chapters 9, 11 and 14 together carry 23 of the book’s 42 exercise questions.
Chapter 10: Care and Maintenance of Fabrics in Institutions (pp. 190-204)
This chapter is institutional laundry: washing equipment, drying, ironing and hot pressing, and the way a hospital laundry functions as a process. It is for students taking the institutional-management strand of Home Science.
The chapter’s topics, in the book’s own order:
- A. Washing Equipment
- B. Drying Equipment and Process
- C. Ironing and Hot pressing
- Process of laundry functioning in hospitals — the hospital flow, the chapter’s core section.
- Preparing For A Career — the institutional-management career section.
Chapter 10 is the only chapter with no indexed figures, so its laundry and hospital hygiene content must be revised as written process steps rather than from diagrams.
The chapter carries 2 activities and 4 questions.
Chapter 11: Resource Management (pp. 205-221)
Despite its title, this chapter is hospitality management: the hotel as a set of departments, the guest cycle, the front office, and housekeeping staffing. It is for students taking the hospitality strand of the subject.
The chapter’s topics, in the book’s own order:
- Hospitality Management — the hotel as departments and sectors.
- Staffing pattern of Housekeeping Department — how housekeeping staff are organised, with the staff-group sections below.
- Group 1 — the first staffing group.
- Group 2 — the second staffing group.
- Material Method of cleaning — the book’s cleaning-method section, indexed under this exact wording.
- Group 3 — the third staffing group.
- Group 4 — the fourth staffing group.
Its 6 figures run across pp. 209-215 — departments and sectors, stages of the guest cycle, front-office organisation, a housekeeper replacing linen, hotel garden lighting, and the housekeeping organisational chart. The chapter closes with 7 exercise questions.
Chapter 12: Consumer Education (pp. 222-240)
This chapter teaches consumer education and consumer protection: what a buyer is entitled to, and the standardisation marks printed on packaged goods. It is where a student learns to read marks such as ISI, Ecomark and FSSAI.
The chapter’s topics, in the book’s own order:
- Consumer Education — what the consumer needs to know.
- Significance Of Consumer Education And Protection — why consumer protection matters.
- Skills Required For Career In Consumer Studies Field — the chapter’s career section.
- Practical 1 — the chapter’s practical exercise.
Chapter 12 covers consumer education and protection, and the figures to learn there are the standardisation marks: Standardisation marks, the ISI mark, Ecomark and the FSSAI mark.
The purchase-expectations figure is at p. 225, consumer protection at p. 228, the ISI and standardisation marks at p. 230, and Ecomark with the FSSAI mark at p. 231. The chapter carries 2 activities and 4 questions.
Chapter 13: Communication and Extension (pp. 241-255)
Development communication is how information is carried to communities, and extension is the work of delivering it there. This chapter teaches both, with the Red Ribbon Express campaign as its case study, for students taking the extension-education strand.
The chapter’s topics, in the book’s own order:
- Development Communication And Journalism
- Red Ribbon Express (RRE) — the campaign that carries the chapter’s case study.
- Information and Communication — the chapter’s information-communication section.
- Scope And Career Avenues In Development Communication — the chapter’s career section.
- Practical 1 — the chapter’s practical exercise.
Chapter 13 is the activity hub, holding 4 of the book’s 13 activities, including the Red Ribbon Express programme. Its 2 figures both sit at p. 247 — the Red Ribbon Express itself and one of its programmes — and it ends with 6 exercise questions.
Chapter 14: Corporate Communication and Public Relations (pp. 256-288)
This chapter is communication inside organisations: corporate communication and public relations — what each does, their functions and principles, and how technology is used to communicate. It is for students aiming at media and PR careers.
The chapter’s topics, in the book’s own order:
- Corporate Communication
- Public Relations
- Functions of Corporate Communication
- Functions of PR
- Major Areas of PR Activity
- Seven Principles of Public Relations — the chapter’s numbered list of principles.
- Knowledge And Skills Required — the career knowledge section.
- Use of Technology to Communicate
Chapter 14 is the longest chapter at 33 pages and the only one with no figures and no activities, so its 9 review questions sit on plain reading.
Notice where the career content sits: inside the chapters, not at the back of the book. Preparing For A Career appears in Chapters 8 and 10, skills for a career in consumer studies in Chapter 12, and the knowledge and skills required for corporate communication in Chapter 14.

How to Use This Book for Revision
A workable order for these seven chapters, based on their shape:
- Start with Chapter 14 (pp. 256-288) — the longest chapter, with no figures and 9 review questions, so it needs fresh reading time.
- Then Chapters 11 (pp. 205-221) and 12 (pp. 222-240) — both carry 6 figures, so anchor the guest cycle and the standardisation marks to those diagrams.
- The fabric cluster — Chapters 8, 9 and 10 (pp. 153-204) — work Chapter 8 with its colour figures open beside you; treat Chapter 9 as pure terminology for its 7 questions; and because Chapter 10 has no figures, write the washing-to-ironing process out as your own flow.
- Keep Chapter 13 (pp. 241-255) for last — it revises as activity and practical work, including the Red Ribbon Express programme.
Two cautions before you start:
- Don’t mix the two “communication” chapters: Chapter 13 is development communication and extension work, while Chapter 14 is corporate communication and public relations for organisations.
- Textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official syllabus before deciding what to revise.
