The directory counts what the book actually contains. The sections column counts numbered section headings — this book prints none, so its real structure is the titled blocks listed under each chapter below.

The figures column counts verified numbered figures indexed from the textbook (7 in total), the activities column counts hands-on tasks (17), and the questions column counts end-of-chapter Review Questions (39).

Chapter 1: Work, Livelihood and Career (pp. 1–28)

This opening chapter frames the book’s first theme: what makes work meaningful work, how work differs from a career or a livelihood, and the traditional occupations of India. It then turns to work across age and gender, gender and work issues, the concerns of working women, and the woman entrepreneur.

  • Work and Meaningful Work
  • Work, Careers and Livelihoods
  • Traditional Occupations of India
  • Work, Age and Gender
  • Gender Issues in Relation to Work
  • Issues and Concerns Related to Women and Work
  • Woman Entrepreneur
  • Review Questions

At 28 pages it is the second-longest chapter of the book. It carries 5 of the book’s 17 activities — the heaviest activity run in the volume — against only 2 review questions, the lightest exercise load in the book, and no numbered figures.

Chapter 2: Nutrition, Food Science and Technology (pp. 29–45)

This chapter introduces clinical nutrition and dietetics as a profession and lays down the basic concepts of nutrition and food science — the vocabulary the later food chapters build on. Its one hands-on demand is Practical 1, the record of a 24-hour dietary intake, which a student must conduct and write up.

  • Record of 24-hour dietary intake

The chapter runs 17 pages with 6 review questions and no activities or numbered figures. It is a text-based chapter, and the 24-hour intake record is the one practical task it sets.

Chapter 3: Public Nutrition and Health (pp. 46–60)

Public nutrition works at the level of populations rather than individuals. The chapter’s basic concepts cover the causes of undernutrition, the set of factors related to undernutrition, and the strategies and interventions used to tackle nutritional problems, closing with career avenues.

Its single indexed figure, Figure 3.1, “Factors Related to Undernutrition” (p. 50), is the diagram to recall when a question asks what lies behind undernutrition.

The chapter spans 15 pages with 4 activities — the second-strongest activity run after Chapter 1 — 6 review questions and 1 indexed figure.

Chapter 4: Food Processing and Technology (pp. 61–74)

The shortest chapter explains why food is processed at all: the development of food processing and technology, the importance of food processing and preservation, and the classes of foods based on perishability. A single activity and a career block close the chapter.

  • Classes of Foods Based on Perishability

  • Review Questions

At 14 pages it is the shortest chapter, yet it carries 7 of the book’s 39 review questions — the densest exercise load in the volume — with 1 activity and no numbered figures.

Chapter 5: Food Quality and … (pp. 75–98)

The chapter’s printed title ends at “Food Quality and …”, but its contents are the book’s food quality and safety chapter. It opens with food safety — the hazards shown in Figures 6.1–6.5 — then moves to food standards and food standards and regulations in India.

Its standards bodies are the Codex Alimentarius Commission, ISO, the differences between Codex and ISO, and the WTO. A common mistake is to open this chapter expecting cooking methods; it is about hazards, safety, and the international bodies that set food standards.

  • Figure 6.5, “Infestation of foods**” (p. 81)
  • Figure 6.6, “Job Opportunities in Food Industry” (p. 90)

At 24 pages it is the third-longest chapter, with 2 activities, 5 review questions and 6 of the book’s 7 verified numbered figures.

Chapter 6: Human Development and Family Studies (pp. 99–115)

This is the chapter for the early childhood care and education side of the subject. It opens with the field’s basic concepts, moves through preparing for a career, and sets two practicals, Practical 1 and Practical 2.

  • Learning Objectives

  • Early Childhood Care and Education

  • Review Questions
  • Practical 1

  • Practical 2

The chapter runs 17 pages with 3 activities, 7 review questions — tied with Chapter 4 for the highest count — and no numbered figures.

Chapter 7: Management of Support Services, Institutions and Programmes for Children, Youth and Elderly (pp. 116–152)

The closing chapter surveys the public side of the subject: institutions, programmes and initiatives for children, youth programmes in India, and some programmes for the elderly — the support services and welfare schemes the earlier chapters lead into. It finishes with preparing for a career and career avenues.

How to use this book for study and revision

The chapters build on each other’s vocabulary, so the reading order matters. This order works for a first reading or a focused revision pass.

  1. Start with Chapter 1, Work, Livelihood and Career — it defines work, career and livelihood, the terms the rest of the book keeps using.
  2. Build the nutrition foundation with Chapters 2 and 3 — the 24-hour dietary intake record and Figure 3.1 on undernutrition belong to this block.
  3. Take the food pair in order: Chapter 4 on processing and perishability, then Chapter 5 on hazards and standards — processing before quality reads naturally.
  4. Use Chapter 6 for the early childhood care and education side of the subject.
  5. Leave Chapter 7 for last — it is the longest chapter and draws on the vocabulary of institutions and programmes built up earlier.

Career guidance by chapter. Career content is spread unevenly: Chapter 1 carries the whole work-and-career argument, while the later chapters compress it into short blocks.

Chapter Pages Where the career content sits
1: Work, Livelihood and Career 1–28 The whole chapter is the work-and-career opener, from Work and Meaningful Work to Woman Entrepreneur.
2: Nutrition, Food Science and Technology 29–45 Preparing for a Career, then Career Avenues.
3: Public Nutrition and Health 46–60 Career Avenues.
4: Food Processing and Technology 61–74 Preparing for a Career, then Career Avenues.
5: Food Quality and … 75–98 Figure 6.6, “Job Opportunities in Food Industry” (p. 90).
6: Human Development and Family Studies 99–115 Preparing for a Career.
7: Management of Support Services, Institutions and Programmes for Children, Youth and Elderly 116–152 Preparing for a Career, then Career Avenues.

Common mix-ups to avoid. Three mistakes cost students time in this book.

Mistake Correct rule How to check your answer
Reading Chapter 5 as a cooking or recipes chapter. Chapter 5 is the food safety and food standards chapter — hazards, Codex, ISO and WTO, not cooking methods. Scan its topic headings: Food Safety, Food Standards, Codex Alimentarius Commission, ISO, WTO.
Treating Chapters 4 and 5 as the same topic. Chapter 4 is food processing and preservation; Chapter 5 is food quality and safety. Chapter 4’s headings end at Classes of Foods Based on Perishability; Chapter 5’s run from Food Safety to the WTO.
Skipping Chapter 1 when revising careers. Chapter 1 is the book’s work-and-career chapter, from meaningful work to the woman entrepreneur. Its headings run from Work and Meaningful Work to Woman Entrepreneur, marking it as the career chapter.

Revision priorities.

  • Question practice: start with Chapters 4 and 6, each carrying 7 of the book’s 39 review questions; Chapter 1’s 2 come last.
  • Hands-on work: Chapter 1 sets 5 activities and Chapter 3 sets 4 — the two busiest chapters for classroom tasks.
  • Practicals to prepare: the 24-hour dietary intake record (Chapter 2), the public nutrition practical (Chapter 3), and the two Chapter 6 practicals.
