What’s inside each chapter
| Ch. | Chapter | Sections | Activities | Figures | Questions |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Human Ecology and Family Sciences | — | — | — | 13 |
| 2 | Understanding Oneself: Adolescence | — | 6 | — | 8 |
| 3 | Food, Nutrition, Health and Fitness | 9 | 1 | — | — |
| 4 | Management of Resources | 1 | 3 | — | 4 |
| 5 | Fabrics Around Us | 7 | 3 | — | 5 |
| 6 | Media and Communication Technology | 3 | 8 | — | 5 |
| 7 | Understanding Family, Community and Society | — | 6 | — | 17 |
Each column counts something NCERT actually prints in the book. A named section is one of the textbook’s own numbered headings (3.1, 5.2, 6.3 and so on); an activity is a printed hands-on task inside the chapter; a question is an end-of-chapter exercise.
Four of the seven chapters — 3, 4, 5 and 6 — carry numbered section headings, while Chapters 1, 2 and 7 print none. In those chapters the work is carried by activities and exercises instead.
Chapter 1: Human Ecology and Family Sciences (pp. 1–4)
This 4-page opening chapter introduces the subject itself — what the study of human ecology and family sciences covers — and closes with a set of review questions that set up the themes of the rest of the book.
Chapter 2: Understanding Oneself: Adolescence (pp. 5–27)
The chapter maps the development of the self from infancy through early and middle childhood to adolescence, and its 6 activities connect the theory to the student’s own experience.
Chapter 3: Food, Nutrition, Health and Fitness (pp. 28–46)
This is the most section-heavy chapter in the book — 9 named sections running from balanced diet, health and fitness and the basic food groups (NCERT, p. 32) through dietary patterns in adolescence (NCERT, p. 37) to eating disorders at adolescence (NCERT, p. 43) — and it is where the book’s nutrition theory concentrates.
Chapter 4: Management of Resources (pp. 47–56)
The chapter introduces the management of resources — what resources mean for a family and how they are managed — and its 3 activities practise the ideas.
Chapter 5: Fabrics Around Us (pp. 57–72)
The chapter follows the route from fibre to fabric — fibre properties (NCERT, p. 58), the classification of textile fibres, yarns, fabric production, textile finishing and some important fibres — with 3 activities for identifying and comparing materials.
Chapter 6: Media and Communication Technology (pp. 73–90)
The chapter’s three named sections — communication and communication technology (NCERT, p. 73), what media is (NCERT, p. 82), and what communication technology is (NCERT, p. 86) — sit under 8 activities, the most in the book, which makes this the hands-on chapter for observing real media use.
Chapter 7: Understanding Family, Community and Society (pp. 91–150)
At 60 pages this is by far the longest chapter in the book, and it works through concerns and needs in diverse contexts — from health and its dimensions, health care and indicators of health to nutrition, nutrients and the factors affecting nutritional well-being.

How to study this book
This order fits the book’s own shape: a short orientation first, the conceptual core in the middle, and the long integrating chapter last.
- Start with Chapter 1 (pp. 1–4) as a ten-minute orientation — it defines what human ecology and family sciences study and frames the rest of the book.
- Move to Chapter 2 (pp. 5–27) next, because the adolescence material is the most personally relatable and its 6 activities build confidence.
- Give Chapter 3 the most time (pp. 28–46): it carries 9 of the book’s 20 named sections and is where the nutrition theory concentrates.
- Work Chapters 4, 5 and 6 (pp. 47–90) in book order as shorter applied units, doing their activities as you go.
- Leave Chapter 7 for last (pp. 91–150), in two sittings, because it runs 60 pages and integrates the units before it.
| Chapter | What it covers | How to study it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The subject itself — what human ecology and family sciences study | Ten-minute orientation read (pp. 1–4) |
| 2 | Development of the self from infancy through adolescence | Read for personal relevance; try the activities (pp. 5–27) |
| 3 | Food, nutrition, health and fitness — balanced diet to eating disorders | Give it the most time; the book’s conceptual core (pp. 28–46) |
| 4 | Managing the family’s resources | Short applied unit; do the activities (pp. 47–56) |
| 5 | Fabrics around us — the route from fibre to fabric | Follow the route in order; compare materials as you go (pp. 57–72) |
| 6 | Media and communication technology | Observational unit; the activities are the point (pp. 73–90) |
| 7 | Family, community and society — health and nutrition in diverse contexts | Read last, in two sittings; integrates the earlier units (pp. 91–150) |
The book sets 27 activities, and treating them as the practical revision for each unit is the fastest way to test your understanding.
