12th Maths Book: NCERT Class 12 Maths in Two Parts

The 12th maths book for Class 12 is printed by NCERT as two separate textbooks: Mathematics Part I and Mathematics Part II. Both official books are linked below, and the official PDFs of both are free downloads.

The split matters because a chapter number alone does not tell you which book to open. Chapters 1–6 sit in Part I and Chapters 7–13 in Part II, so any chapter numbered seven or higher always means the second book.

Which 12th maths book do you need?

The deciding test is the chapter number. It tells you which of the two textbooks to open, without checking anything else.

You can route by topic the same way. Part I holds the foundation chapters — relations and functions, matrices, determinants, continuity and derivatives. Part II holds the applied chapters — integrals, differential equations, vectors, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability.

What the teacher called the book also works: “Part 1” or “the first book” means Mathematics Part I, while “Part 2” or “the second book” means Mathematics Part II.

The common mistake is opening Part I for a Chapter 7 question because it was the first book you received. A chapter number of seven or more always means the second book — Chapter 7 Integrals is in Mathematics Part II.

Note that the two parts are a chapter split, not a term split. Both books serve the one Class 12 maths syllabus, so questions in a single exam can come from either book.

The Class 12 Maths chapter list: all 13, part by part

Here are the 13 chapter names, split part by part. Each chapter name below is followed by one line on what it teaches.

Mathematics Part I — Chapters 1–6

Part I builds the mathematical language and tools. Its six chapters move from relations and functions through matrices and determinants to continuity, differentiability and the applications of derivatives.

• Chapter 1 — Relations and Functions: classifies relations as reflexive, symmetric, transitive or equivalence relations, and functions as one-one, onto or bijective, then builds composition and invertibility.
• Chapter 2 — Inverse Trigonometric Functions: defines the principal value branches of inverse trigonometric functions and the properties that simplify them.
• Chapter 3 — Matrices: covers the order and types of matrices, operations on them, the transpose, symmetric and skew-symmetric matrices, and invertible matrices.
• Chapter 4 — Determinants: evaluates determinants of orders one, two and three, uses them for the area of a triangle, works with minors and cofactors, and solves linear systems using the inverse of a matrix.
• Chapter 5 — Continuity and Differentiability: defines continuity and the algebra of continuous functions, then differentiates composite, implicit, inverse trigonometric and parametric functions.
• Chapter 6 — Application of Derivatives: applies derivatives to rate of change, increasing and decreasing functions, and maxima and minima.

Mathematics Part II — Chapters 7–13

Part II applies those tools. Its seven chapters work through integration, differential equations, vector algebra, three-dimensional geometry, linear programming and probability.

• Chapter 7 — Integrals: treats integration as the inverse process of differentiation and works through substitution, trigonometric identities, partial fractions, integration by parts, definite integrals and the fundamental theorem of calculus.
• Chapter 8 — Application of Integrals: uses the definite integral to find the area under simple curves.
• Chapter 9 — Differential Equations: distinguishes order and degree, then solves equations that are variables-separable, homogeneous or linear.
• Chapter 10 — Vector Algebra: introduces vectors, their addition and scalar multiplication, the section formula, and the dot and cross products including projection.
• Chapter 11 — Three Dimensional Geometry: works with direction cosines and ratios, equations of a line in space, angles between lines, and shortest distance.
• Chapter 12 — Linear Programming: formulates a linear programming problem and solves it by the graphical method.
• Chapter 13 — Probability: develops conditional probability, the multiplication theorem, independent events and Bayes’ theorem.

How to use the Class 12 Maths NCERT books: price and order of study

Across the 400 printed pages of both parts, the books organise 13 chapters into 100 named syllabus sections and index just 9 verified numbered figures from the textbook — six of them in Chapter 2. This is an algebra-heavy course, so the practice that matters is working exercises, not reading diagrams.

Study the parts in order. Part I is sequential, and Part II assumes it:

• Chapter 7 Integrals needs fluency in the derivatives of Chapters 5–6.
• Chapter 8 Application of Integrals and Chapter 9 Differential Equations both need Chapter 7.
• Chapter 11 Three Dimensional Geometry uses the vector algebra of Chapter 10.

The question load shows where the work sits:

• The two books together carry 704 exercise questions.
• Chapter 7 Integrals alone holds 190 of them.
• The three heaviest chapters — Continuity and Differentiability, Integrals and Differential Equations — hold 372 between them.
• Application of Integrals has only 4, and Linear Programming has 10.

One caution: textbook contents and the examinable syllabus are not always identical — check the current official CBSE syllabus before planning what to revise.
