NCERT Books Class 12 Home Science: Part I and Part II

The NCERT books Class 12 Home Science are printed as two separate textbooks: Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part I (chapters 1 to 7, pages 1–152) and Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part II (chapters 8 to 14, pages 153–288). Both are linked below — each to its own page and its official NCERT PDF.

The split matters because the official chapter numbering runs 1 to 14 across both volumes, while each book restarts its own local numbering at 1.

Page numbering runs continuously from Part I page 1 to Part II page 288, so a chapter number or a page number alone does not tell you which book to open — Part II begins at page 153.

This listing is maintained for the 2026-27 session.

NCERT Books Class 12 Home Science: How to Choose

Five quick ways to identify the right book — use whichever clue you have.

  • By chapter number. Chapters 1 to 7 are Part I — from Work, Livelihood and Career through Management of Support Services, Institutions and Programmes for Children, Youth and Elderly. Chapters 8 to 14 are Part II — from Fabric and Apparel through Corporate Communication and Public Relations.
  • By page number. Pages 1 to 152 are Part I; pages 153 to 288 are Part II, because page numbering runs straight across the two volumes.
  • By topic. Food, nutrition, food processing and human development all sit in Part I. Fabric, fashion, hospitality, consumer protection and communication all sit in Part II — so the topic alone can route you to the right book.
  • By what the teacher called it. “Home Science Part I” or “HEFS Part I” means the first volume; “Part II” means the second.
  • By PDF file name. Official NCERT PDFs run lehe101 to lehe107 for Part I and lehe201 to lehe207 for Part II — the digit after “lehe” is the book.

One mistake catches students first: Part II restarts its own chapter numbering at 1, so a chapter number printed inside the second book is local — “Chapter 4” in Part II is not the official chapter 4 of the subject. Always check the cover title before you search by chapter number.

Where the directory data holds a truncated title, judge by topic instead: chapter 5 is the food quality chapter, and chapter 12 is the consumer protection chapter — the one whose figures show standardisation marks such as ISI, Ecomark and FSSAI.

What each book covers

Part I — Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part I is the food and people half of the subject. It opens with work, livelihood and career, covers nutrition, public health, food processing and food quality, moves into human development and family studies, and closes with the management of support services, institutions and programmes for children, youth and the elderly.

If your homework names nutrition, food or human development, the chapter is in Part I.

Part II — Human Ecology and Family Sciences Part II is everything after the food block.

It opens with fabric and apparel, fashion design and merchandising, and the care and maintenance of fabrics in institutions, then resource management (including hospitality), consumer protection with standardisation marks such as ISI, Ecomark and FSSAI, and communication and extension, closing with corporate communication and public relations.

If your homework names fashion, textiles, hospitality, consumer rights or communication, the chapter is in Part II.

Across the two books, this directory holds 34 verified numbered figures indexed from the textbook, with 27 of them in Part II — most in the fabric and apparel and resource management chapters.
