How to tell which CBSE Class 11 physics book is yours
Three quick tests settle it tonight, without opening either file.
- By chapter number: chapters 1–7 are in Physics Part I; chapters 8–14 are in Physics Part II.
- By topic: measurement, motion, forces, work and energy, rotation and gravitation point to Part I; solids, fluids, heat, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, oscillations and waves point to Part II.
- By what the teacher called it: “first book” means Part I, “second book” means Part II.
There is also a page-number test: chapters sit on pages 1–143 of Part I and 167–299 of Part II. Part I stops at page 143 and Part II resumes at page 167, leaving the intervening pages — title pages and contents of the second volume — belonging to no chapter of either book in the indexed PDFs.
The most common mistake is opening the wrong file: Part I and Part II are separate PDFs, so a topic from the second half will not be found anywhere in Part I.
Physics Part I and Part II: what each textbook teaches
Physics Part I is the mechanics half. It teaches measurement and units, motion in a straight line and in a plane, Newton’s laws of motion, work and energy, rotational motion and gravitation — opening with the international system of units (NCERT, p. 1).
Part I’s longest chapter, Systems of Particles and Rotational Motion, runs 35 pages — longer than the first two chapters combined. It also builds tools Part II assumes: the vector product used in chapter 6 depends on the vector resolution taught in chapter 3, so these chapters read best in printed order.
Physics Part II is the matter, heat and waves half. It covers mechanical properties of solids and fluids, thermal properties of matter, thermodynamics, kinetic theory, oscillations and waves — the physics of engines, materials and sound. Where Part I sets up concepts, Part II applies and extends them, so it reads as the sequel, not a fresh start.

One naming trap: chapter 14’s printed title is Displacement Relation in a Progressive Wave, but it is the waves chapter. Students searching for “waves” should look for chapter 14 — there is no chapter actually called Waves.
